Another spongy brake issue. Sign In

I have a 2009 Dodge Nitro 2.8 diesel 4x4 with 30 k. Car has sat for the past 4 weeks, when I went to drive it I immediately noticed the brake pedal was spongy. Decided to do a test drive, brakes still work fine as does the abs, no warning lights just a spongy pedal which will go all the way to the floor with constant foot pressure. If I stop the engine the pedal goes hard with normal movement but as soon as I start her up again away goes the pedal. If I disconnect the vacum pipe and start the engine up i get hard pedal as normal but brakes are very hard to push and not very effective. No leaks visible and plenty of brake fluid in the resev. Im thinking master cylinder but having read previous discussions on this type of issue sounds as if it could be related to ABS. Any thoughts welcome.
Thanks
Bill

If you aren't losing any fluid then you have what we call internal bypassing. 90% of the time that is a bad master cylinder but occasionally it can be the ABS unit.

This has to be some sort of Chrysler gremlin. I'll be watching this thread too, did you read through mine?:

Similar scenario, car sat a while and now I have a spongy pedal.

No, lets stop the cross posting and keep these threads separated. Read if you like. Just don't start cross posting.
