I have a 2001 Dodge Neon that I use for as a work vehicle. The brake light came on today. I checked the brake fluid and it was low, so I added more to fill up the plastic tank. The light went off. I then noticed that when I drive it and use the brake pedal, it starts off having normal braking pressure. I can put my foot down halfway and it will start to stop fine, but then the pedal will go all the way to the floor. It stops like that, but is scary. It will stay like that for a few mins and then it will go back to normal brake pedal pressure. Then a few mins later it starts doing that again. I checked the fluid and it is still at proper level. I have very little mechanical knowledge, so any insight would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Quote ">> I have very little mechanical knowledge, so any insight would be much appreciated.<<" Basing suggestion on that comment. Brakes are hydraulically engaged by your foot pedal thru master cylinder and on. Low fluid is usually a leak or never been checked in ages and disc brakes do use fluid to displace wear. Different feel of brakes and travel at the pedal is............. Air got in system, bad master cylinder and a list more. Brakes are not a good place to learn by trial and error. If you don't have some experienced help to check the whole thing out it has the potential to really mess you up. IDK, if rusty at all, broken bleeders on to broken lines to make up new one little problem if it is can be a lot of work and know how. Suggesting get the right help with tools for any snags or send it out for a total brake inspection and fix as a pro tech would do, T
