How to fix texture: repainting seems inadequate.

You're going to have to strip that right down to the base and then seal it before painting.

Do you mean sand blast it?

Re: Rough Texture on metal Bodywork Sign In

That's one possible method. You can use chemical stripper or a power sander also. Either way, it's going to be a real lot of work before it's ready for paint.

What causes this? could it be rust? or just old paint?

Re: Rough Texture on metal Bodywork Sign In

I can't tell what it is from the pictures. I thought it was something that someone sprayed on.

I agree, especially considering the white car pic before the black gunk go put on. Do you know what kind of paint causes this ungainly texture?

No, and it doesn't really matter. It has to be stripped off.

Re: Rough Texture on metal Bodywork Sign In

Someone paint that with Rinoliner, Herculiner or a truck bed coating?Shocked

In the 3rd picture you linked it looks like it was originally tan. Then they sprayed a liner on the floor pans and decided to do the whole car? LOL

Re: Rough Texture on metal Bodywork Sign In

That isn't or can't be a Super Beatle with those tail light nor body parts as Super Beatle didn't have dual exhaust TMK so body all wrong but fit. It was also fuel injected I think and sold to US anyway just a couple models before the Rabbit took over. Kept making them new I think in Brazil ages longer for other places and could sneak them back in if claiming over 25 model years old using VIN from the older one.

They made so many of these you can get anyone's sheet metal parts for these but most wont fit properly.

If paint messed up is the only concern what that pic shows is like undercoating as DS just said. Would have to remove that down to bare metal and start over IMO.

Paint messed up, no bumper shown, parts don't fit year to year on these. it's a total project car now IMO,

Re: Rough Texture on metal Bodywork Sign In

Yes, that is a SuperBeetle and it did have dual exhaust pipes that came from a single muffler. I used them as handles to pull the motor out. (10 minutes) There were no fuel injected Beetles in or around '71. Fuel injection was just being introduced in Type 3 and Type 4 models around then.

My first job as a mechanic was for a VW dealership in '70, '71

Have to take your word for it - most folks here I don't recall keeping these cars long just bought another and another.
The beginning of the end of the flat four air cooled bug era. Not handy for cold areas no amusing heat or defroster the problem.
Pre smog great for making dune buggies is really what I recall,

Re: Rough Texture on metal Bodywork Sign In

If you're thinking of painting it with rustoleum and a roller I guess none of this conversation matters.
