2003 Jeep Wrangler X with 175,000 miles and automatic transmission.

After traveling at freeway speeds for 45 minutes to one hour, the RPMs jump from around 2,000 to between 3,500 and 4,000. Also, the transmission does not seem to change gears anymore once this happens. The check engine light is on.

It seems to shift gears again after I turn the car off and let it sit for a couple of hours.

Driving with the over-drive turned off seems to prevent this from happening.

Advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

It sounds like the TCM is setting a code and putting the unit into limp mode which basically locks you into 2nd gear.

You need to have the transmission codes read and post them here. These are not regular engine codes and require a professional level scan tool. Don't waste your time at Autozone.

Once you have posted the codes, I expect our resident Trans expert, Gary to stop by and advise.
