Hello, They can try to relearn it, there cannot be any codes present in the trans or engine or it will not work. How is it shifting?

Ok, just to finish this thread up...... Unfortunately This story ends with the worst possible outcome for a DIY Attempt with help of Carjunky... I couldn't get to the Valve body / Cover without taking many components out of the engine compartment, because the Valve body is located on the side of the transmission on a Hyundai Elantra, not the bottom. Therefore, I was not able to Check on the harness .. and other error codes to replace for a cheaper fix. Since the replacement of the valve body would have been similar in labour costs of the shop, then the complete transmission and I found a used one for 1k ( through the shop) I decided to replace the entire transmission, which turned out to be not intact either and programming it didn't fix it ( according to the shop) ... So the shop returned the used tranni and put another one in... end of the story: Car runs great now.... Moral of the story : ... if somebody can take anything home from this story ... if your transmission is not just slipping, but shifting real hard and long delays to shift into gear .. A Transmission Fluid Change will not fix it ! Neither will Lucas transmission lubricant ! To check for codes and if accessible quick fixes like exchanging solenoids is def. worth a try !

That is very true. Fluid change is done to prevent problems but it will never fix a problem that is already there. Neither will anything in a bottle or can. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

@hammertime From your experience / suggestions ... at what milage would you suggest a transmission fluid change ? Even when several car makers suggest to never change the fluid of their models and speak of a " life time fluid "

Gary is the real expert here but the policy I have always adhered to is that fluid change is done as a preventative and not a cure for anything. Systems have changed a lot in recent years and many more require specialized fluids now. Many manufacturers still recommend changes, some quite frequently. Many Toyotas for example require changing it every 60K and inspect every 30K. I don't always agree with manufacturer interval because often their goal is to reduce maintenance costs rather than extend life. For example doing engine oil changes at 7K intervals using regular oil is far too long and I would never go that far on my own vehicle. I think a general rule of thumb on ATF is 80-90K unless the manufacturer recommends sooner but if the current fluid is very dark and has any kind of burnt smell, it's too late for an fluid change. I would defer to Gary's advice if it differs from mine. He is the trans expert.
