I have a 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan with 150k miles and an automatic transmission. Recently I have noticed that it has been difficult to move the gear shifter from park to other gears. Does this need to be greased or something of that sort? I don’t have any shifting issues once it’s in drive etc

Are you parked on an incline when this happens? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Sounds like you have some excessive wear internally. I'm going to move this to the trans section so our trans expert will see it.

Is the shifter lever stiff moving it through the gears or does it not want to come out of park? If it is stiff, it could be a cable binding or linkage in the steering column binding also. You could disconnect the cable end at the steering column and see if the stiffness remains. That would give you direction where to look. If it is hard coming out of park, you could have a shift interlock issue such as a sticking btsi solenoid or electrical issue such as a brake light switch being out of adjustment or not electrically working properly. You should be able to look at the side of the column where the btsi solenoid lives and watch it while you push on the brake when the ignition on. It should be moving. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Hello, Another thing you can check, i've seen this plenty of times, make sure all your grounds are good, if not the cable acts as the ground. Also, if possible, disconnect the cable at the trans and move the cable see if it moves easier.

Sorry for the long delay, its been a busy month... The shifter lever is difficult when moving through the gears. I will try disconnecting the cable at the steering column to see if the shifter is still stiff and go from there. Thank you for responding

You want to disconnect it at the trans not the column to see if the cable is the problem. If you try to shift it at the trans with the cable off, make sure you block the wheels first.
