2018 Golf - clicks while turning

hi guys, first post here. my 2018 golf makes a clicking sound when i turn the wheel, higher pitched to begin with and lower pitched as i get to the extreme. only on the left side. a mechanic told me it was the steering box but i got a weird vibe and you know the whole stereotype of mechanics taking advantage of women, so ive been poking around online and it sounds more like videos ive watched of bad CV joints. important: IT MAKES THIS SOUND WHEN I TURN THE WHEEL WHILE THE CAR IS STATIONARY. i add that because all the vids ive wayched have the cars moving. if anyone has some perspective on this or could tell me some diagnostics to run id be very grateful

? CV joints are NOT even in use sitting still so not that. It's a noise so far perhaps if a helper just listened with hood open when it does this would find the location hopefully know what item it is possibly in the accessory drive belt or items it's also turning as sitting still and turning is hard work for power steering scrubbing tires vs when moving even 1 MPH or less, T

Sounds to me like a dry ball joint or bad upper strut plate. It would have to be examined closer to determine that. It wouldn't hurt to just get a second opinion from a different shop. You don't really have a steering box in that car. It's a rack and pinion and I've never seen one make noises like that. Make sure that noise isn't coming from the Power steering belt also. That should be readily recognizable to an experienced tech. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

thank you both for the replies. im in south america so "steering box" vs "steering rack" may have gotten lost in translation. for now im most concerned with ruling the rack out as the issue, so if theres any diagnostics i could run to prove its definitely not that, let me know. car moving, not moving, running, not running, sound inside the cab, only outside, etcetera

The only diagnostics to do is to zero in on where the noise is originating. We rely on feel to do that but you have to be very careful of your fingers when someone is turning the wheel. If you have something like a bad strut mount of dry ball joint you can feel the vibration if you are touching the component while the noise is occurring. Just don't let your fingers get pinched between moving parts.

You would want weight of the car's wheels on lifts or set on higher and safe ways with someone else steering it. This could be hard do be sure for a "one person" job just to be more sure. Hate to fix things that are NOT broken because you were wrong. Racks may move how and where mounted way too much still hard to see that alone suggest look for a shop to diagnose even if you wish to take this on. Chose one that also will do alignments many things would require that done real soon or right away when done, T
