95 Chevy Truck noise in reverse ONLY?

1995 Chevy truck short bed single cab 305/5.0L 125,000 miles. I have a noise that sounds like metal on metal that is not a constent squeak but like a squeak-squeak-squeak. It only happens in reverse and the squeak speeds up as truck speed speeds up. The squeak however does not make the noise going in reverse while the truck is in neutral as in going backwards down a hill. So i jacked up the rear end and put it in reverse to try and locate it but i was unable to pin point it. So I took the tires off and loosened the rear breaks so they could be ruled out and it still made the noise. While jacked up i put it in neutral and rotated the tires both ways and found that it did not make the noise. I get about 2 or 3 squeaks per revolution of the tires so that to me would mean somthing with the drive shafts like the U joints. Can the U joints make a noise like this while rotating ONLY in the reverse gear? Another option i thought about was the rear axle might make the noise when under torque if not lubed well enough. If so how would you lube the rear axle to see if that is the problem? Any help or thought would be appreciated Thanks!

Agree! When you replace them, replace them with greasable ones. Loren SW Washington

Agree totally: If you get ones with grease fittings - suggested as said you may need a needle greaser available to get at them - no problem, T
