i am working on this truck for my fiances boss. it is a 93 dodge dakota with a 3.9L engine and 181,000 miles. she said the truck was going down the road and it just quit. i listened for the fuel pump and heard nothing. today i put a fuel pump and filter on it. still nothing. the fuel pump relay isn't clicking either. the check engine light doesn't illuminate when the key is turned on either. i replaced the relay with a known good relay and still nothing. all fuses are intact as well.

The fuel pump will only run for three or four seconds when the ignition is initially turned on. So, ya gotta be quick.Smile You may need a helper. I will put a funnel in the fuel neck and listen while a helper turns on the key. You should, then, be able to hear it run. Also, a fuel pressure test would tell you for sure. The A/C and fuel pump relays are generally the same, so you could swap them for testing. If still nothing, then you'll need to make sure you are getting 12V at the pump. If you have fuel pressure, but none getting thru the injectors, then we'll need to proceed from there.

i had my fiance turn the key while i laid under the truck and the fuel pump never came on. i swapped the a/c relay and the fuel pump relays already and nothing happened. i wouldn't be getting 12v at the pump if the relay wasn't clicking. also shouldn't the check engine light be coming on when i turn the key?

Yes, the CEL should come on when the ignition is turned on. Could be a burned out bulb, or someone removed the bulb. But, won't cause the issue at hand. The relay will only click once when power is supplied and once when it is removed. Shouldn't click repetively. Check power at the pump. Check fuel pressure. Check injector pulse during crank. You may have a circuit problem going to the pump.

Just a thought...

Did you check for spark?
Check to see if it jumped time?(timing chain)

Read this....

LOCATION

The Automatic Shut Down (ASD) relay is located in the engine compartment.

PURPOSE

The ASD supplies battery voltage to the fuel pump relay. It also supplies voltage to the fuel injectors, ignition coil, and O2 sensor heating element.

OPERATION

The ground circuit for the ASD relay is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The PCM operates the relay by switching the ground circuit on and off.

The PCM monitors distributor signal to determine engine speed and compute injector synchronization. If the PCM does not receive a distributor signal when ignition switch is in RUN position, it will de-energize (remove ground) from ASD relay. Battery voltage will be cut to the fuel pump relay. It will also be cut to the fuel injectors, ignition coil, and O2 sensor heater element.
