1997 Chev1500 stalls while driving Sign In

My 1997 1500 Chev stalls while driving. The seatbelt light flashes and the gas gauge ticks back and forth, you hear a buzz then it quits. It starts up again as soon as you put it in park. It happens sporadically. Checked battery cables and they are good. Couldnt find any corroded or loose wires. Any suggestions?

How did you check battery cable connections? Just that they were tight? Not good enough. You really need to look see, clean and grease at least.

No clue about fuel gauge and it quitting and starting after putting it in park except a chance ground wires may be weak and just shifting makes for another route? There's one right at battery and another underhood engine to frame of many that go battery or engine block to ground body metal.

Buzz may be a relay just not getting proper power. Mostly not sure on this but rule things out. Get code readings and write down the #s if any and might not after messing with battery quite yet,

Is this a 5.7? If so, check ground at passenger side rear of engine that runs to frame. Also check ground from lower passenger side front of block ( down by crank pulley) to battery neg. Make sure both of those grounds are clean and in good shape. Have the battery and charging system tested. Sounds of a connection or voltage problem, so I would start there.

Super high chances this is a 5.7 or a 5.0 so I didn't ask yet Rob. I happen to own the K2500 of this same model year so knew right where those ground straps should be. I think we were on the same page that poor grounds COULD be the problem since somehow shifting seems to make it better again!!?? That could just be routing ground thru either linkage or who knows from the motion?? Guesswork so far so have to rule that crap out for sure.

Age is enough but if in rust country Rob and I would know you pay attention to those things as they are exposed to elements. I spray grease them anytime I'm near them and so far so good. Nobody really does that so the funky problem can happen or express themselves in strange ways up to not running and other things throughout vehicle,

Tom - Yeah, strange as usually starter is first to see effects of ground issue, but free and easy place to look and see. Wasnt trying to say you didnt know, just throwing in my $.02

On the same page with the likely IMO. Ron, Nick and myself live in rust belt places so get more tuned in to it perhaps. All should know what totally unexplainable crap can happen and might self correct a few times with wiring connections, plugs ins or grounds. The truck box shouldn't have anything to do with it but it too get grounded as they are mounted on rubber donuts and springs are not a ground nor is exhaust system dependable thru the hangers.

It was the shifting that caught my eye on this.

True story from ages ago: A Mustang II (1974) if anyone recalls those had suddenly locked up its clutch pedal. (Cable clutch linkage) "What the heck happened?" To find out that an engine to body strap totally had snapped and it sought ground thru the clutch cable that nicely welded itself from the overload! That was a friend and I when it happened but if you tried to explain something that nuts to a customer they would think you were totally nuts. Somewhere up there like the car was red was the problemCrazy

It was the starter draw that did that instantly as it was fine right before that. Point is when whacked things happen it's the first thing I'll go looking for. That example made itself obvious quickly which is nice but not if you are far away from where it could be fixed which did require a new cable as it was stuck with pedal up top/engaged but car would run.

It's the intermittent stuff that is a real pest to isolate so you check on them all or the ones you know it must have,

some thoughts -
hopefully you do NOT have a remote starter... so problematic.

THis year I am pretty sure ( will dbl ck) was well known for problems with the ignition switch - the electrical switch no t to be confused with the lock - shorting out, bad contacts, wiring etc.

One thing is crossing my mind right now. This is a 97, so its OBD2. Have you had this scanned for trouble codes? What were the code numbers that came up? If you don't own a scanner most major parts stores will scan it for free. Just make sure you get the exact code numbers from them, not a generic description.

Other good things to check have been suggested with power and ground connections, but I like to check for codes on any driveability issue to see if there is a clue coming up to make my diagnostic time a little shorter.
