Engine OVERHEATING? Sign In

Hello all!

i am currently driving a
2007 chevrolet Equinox.
the engine is 3.4
and it has 251k on it.

while driving i have no issues, but as i come to a stop at a red light and the car idles for a good 30+ seconds, the car gives me warrnings such as engine overheating, let car idle, as well as Engine reduced power. As soon as i apply gas the temperature gadge goes back in the right direction and normal driving resumes.
(never seen any smoke, even can happen on a cool night)
is it really overheating? whats wrong with this thing?

thanks to anyone that could share some advice!

You are kidding aren't you? 251,000 miles on anything and even well cared for something goes wrong?

It's hot almost everywhere, extremes any which way bring out the weak links. It probably is running hot to real overheating. You may be able to know by requesting heat and if it blows cold your coolant is boiling or low and air in system.

If you wish to depend as well as possible on a vehicle with tons of miles you have to have followed service schedules to the letter. Some things just wear out and expect that. Radiator is original is probably trash, water pump could have worn impeller not circulating enough for idle speeds, fans and a whole list of possible things.

Step one is make sure coolant is full and appears clean. That's full at radiator not just a recovery tank and if not cap and no clue how to know you may need help with just that much,

Sounds like the fan is not working to me.

Is your AC getting warm when stopped also?

See if the fan works and see if the system is full when totally cooled down.

i dont see either fans from the radiator spinning, now if this is the issue how can i check if its the radiator assembly kit that's not working, or if it's an electrical problem

Test for power and ground arriving at them when the AC is on. They are supposed to run all the time with AC.
