1998 Chevrolet Prizm-Thrown Rod/Engine Replacement Sign In

My brother in law borrowed my car for vacation because he didn't trust his. Ironically, it broke down on the way home, 30 miles from his house. Just got the info from the mechanic, thrown rod, needs a new engine. Questions:

1. How likely is it that my brother in law may have caused this, or is this just something that would have happened to me eventually?
2. Before this I had a 97 Geo Prism that I gave to my in-laws. Can this engine be used in my 98 Chevy Prizm? If so, what kind of cost are we looking at to swap them out.
3. What kind of cost am I looking at to replace the engine with a used/rebuilt/new engine?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Not fun no matter what I say. HT took something you did wrong here out so what's wrong?

Could a cheap car just blow up like that? Yes - IMO. Where fluids (oil) full or do you even know?

Was routine mainenance up to date?

Thowing a rod is something out of history to me. Usually that was bad luck, ignoring warnings or way over revving an engine. Could it just be the bad luck - yes!

Cheap disposable car IMO. Learning NOT to lend stuff is up to you,

T

wow, pretty opinionated Wink...fluids were good, i had just done a oil change before the trip...my mechanic says he's almost positive bro-in-law didn't cause this...i have no problems with loaning him the car and would probably do it again...$2k to replace with a used and $5k for a new...i'd rather put that towards a new car...the geo option wasn't viable...thanks for your reply
