1995 Toyota Celcia GT burns oil? Sign In

Im in the market for a cheap car, and a car popped up that I may want. Its a 1995 Toyota Celcia GT with 185,000 on it, but the engine was replaced in 2011 by dealership. I'd pay $850 for it. The body is in great condition blah blah... but the seller says it burns oil. Says if she drives it for 7 hours it'll burn about a quart of oil. I'm not very mechanically savvy, so I'm worried even though its a newer engine, it'll need to be replaced. Any thoughts? Am i possibly buying a money pit?

First you do intend to have your choice of automotive technician look the vehicle over....? best money you can spend on a used vehicle.
The engine was replaced - but was it a USED engine? unlikely remanufactured or reconditioned.

Yeah so the girl says the dealership installed the new engine and that it was new when they put it in. Whats the cost to have a mechanic look at it and how long would that take usually? Because "5 year old engine" and "burns oil" seems suspicious to me.

What are you buying the vehicle for? If this is going to be your main source of transportation, don't buy it. If not and it is something to tinker with, that is your choice if you want to mess around with a possible engine mechanical problem. Either way, you should have your mechanic check it over as Kevin stated, so you know what your getting yourself into.

Yeah I'd buy it for main transportation. I currently drive a 1990 Buick Lesabre with 300,000 miles on it and issues a plenty. To get mine working I need to replace a half shaft and wheel hub assembly and diagnose and fix my engine issue I described in the "troubleshooting" section of this site. I am looking at $1000 for a new car or continue to deal with mine *grumbles*... so this one sparked my attention because it has low-ish miles, everyone says they love them, and it's only $850. And maybe I can make it a year without spending 10 hours on YouTube because I cant afford the car shop :)

Why would you buy a car that you already know has serious internal problems, not to mention all the other things that are going to be wasted at that mileage.

At $1000 budget for a car, I really can't be picky. Its pretty depressing actually. Life of a responsible college student. But sounds to me like this car would be a bad idea.

The motor is shot and the rest of the car is worn out. What good is it?

       the "girl"* said the dealership installed a NEW engine, the "girl" diagnosed the oil loss as consumption...
you have a technician you trust helping with the buick - why not talk to him about looking at the Toyota and what it would cost...

* the seller said. Crazy

Just pass on this one. If it burns OR leaks that much oil you can guess it ran out to find out so if it was a good engine it isn't now.

Price up front for the right used car is appealing for sure but costs to repair far outdo any bargains at purchase.

Have cars checked out pre-purchase by a real professional. Stuff can still go wrong but rule out the fatal costs this one probably has now,

Yeah you're right about that. I think I'll just pass on the car. Seems there may be better options out there, and I'll for sure get someone to look at it beforehand if I decide to get it.
