rear wheel axle stuck on hub Sign In

Hi guys, I am trying to change rear wheel bearing hub on 2012 Honda CRV and axle is stuck in hub. I've tried everything I can think of, hub puller/ with slide hammer, air hammer, sledge hammer out of desperation. I don't have torches for heating. This isn't a rusting issue. I don't want to have to remove the knuckle and ruin the alignment to have it pressed out. Thanks.

If it isn't a rusting issue, then what is it? It's just a slide in spline so if it isn't rusted it should slide right out. It has to be a rust issue.

If you have tried everything you say you have, then removing the knuckle is your only option left.

Hi, I have soaked in WD40 and let set overnight. You are probably right but I can't see any rusting around the axle.

Re: rear wheel axle stuck on hub Sign In

It will be on the splines if any moisture got in there.

Drown it with rust penetrant and try to blow it deeper into the splines with air.

You really should be pulling on the hub, not pushing on the axle. Where is it going to go if the knuckle is bolted solid anyway? Use a heavy duty slide hammer.

Re: rear wheel axle stuck on hub Sign In

IDK why such a problem if not stuck with rust. If so probably submerged when it was warm/hot still would slide out?
Like this in picture if it shows?

Nut and junk off then 4 back bolts like that? Did you get all 4 or think just 3? If bearing was continued to be driven on with wild symptoms you just might have welded it on I hope nobody would miss that level of a problem and keep driving it,

T
(edit) To add. WD-40 isn't for any type of severe rust. PB is totally stronger but may wait - shouldn't be for this time??

Hi Tom, This is my sisters car and didn't know the noise was so bad. I have replaced hubs before and never had this bad of a problem, usually if stuck a little pressure loosens it. It has always been a straight forward job. If welded on this is going to be not fun.Unsure

Re: rear wheel axle stuck on hub Sign In

Gary - ask her how bad this got then if you can't spin it now in place at all or what?
Hub bearings are both races and out of sight the real bearing pressed into that - ONCE.

I've really not seen a hub type weld up but have greaseable bearings you adjust burn up so bad race to axle was about one item decide with the horror show to save or toss all. Heat can work if it blew apart a never for this type as by the time it could would be so offensive sounding and feel IDK who could miss it?

Others were trailer had the excuse you don't hear it from tow vehicle all submerged BTW admittedly so.

There's still some space the would/could suck in water will end the game for those not caught right away.

You said you lacked heat meaning oxy/acet I take it? That would cut it off but do you want the spindle if it did? NO. Heat ruins metal that would cut it is no longer known hardness.

Might just be a rock and hard place yours to decide if only an alignment is the problem find or get tools to cut it off!
Be sure gary that's what you're only choice is if you are guessing with it right in front of you it needs to go out there's just something not right about this much trouble for a Honda anything but never say never.

I looked up parts first to see what it should look like still can be wrong and another type totally?? Not responsible (me) for lousy info on parts look ups to see new what it was or should be.

BTT ask your sister what the heck made her complain if this is that messed up IDK why you can't tell now?

Tom

Re: rear wheel axle stuck on hub Sign In

Hi Tom, My sister doesn't like to bother me and didn't tell me, got some bad advice from a friend who said she could keep driving. Money was also the issue. So turn up the stereo and keep on driving and here we are. I didn't want to use heat because of the issues you brought up. I looked up a axle zoomed in and after the spline it looks like there is an area where it fits into the bearing and that might be where it is smoked. I can get some torches and if I have to cut it out then so be it. I'll soak it down with some PB and try what I been doing again, you never know it might break free! No good deed goes unpunished. Thanks for the time you put into this I appreciate it being this my first time on the forum and thanks also to Hammertime ! I will let you know how this turns out.Smile

Re: rear wheel axle stuck on hub Sign In

Laugh? ">No good deed goes unpunished.<" ---Been there done that WAY too much!

OK, you know a bit about "torches" isn't enough yet. Oxy/acet I call my "blue wrench" - one size fits all, nuts bolts fasteners if glowing cooperate. No welding really by me is most useful to me for rusted parts, exhaust cutting. Highly doubt rentable but there are very small ones just don't last as long. 2 to 1 O2 to Acet is what you'll use for cutting. I bought two O2 tanks and one acet then on exchange are pony size like scuba tanks have been portable a must also in my case.

For the cost I know you said $$ a problem this isn't worth it for once. I did somewhat recently buy new Victor (no fakes) gauges and hoses not free like $500 smackers fast was a sale!

Please take warning if or when cutting the "slag" dances around on surface below or Suprises with grease if not familiar. CAN'T use near fuel things, lines, tanks filler necks. Just don't take risks like that with it if you go there.

You knew glowing heat you've lost hardness of item or intended properties of metal that go that hot.

Up to you understand you. $$ things matter but this wouldn't be or shouldn't be that costly to let a qualified tech just do for both of your sakes. If plain "NO" on the $ IDK what to do about that for you and sister. Stinks, vehicles and keeping them, buying them costs a fortune for most people.

Take a real hard look again so as already said BE CORRECT this is so bad it will require cutting it off I hope used is cheap enough and available to you also - I think going rate for full alignment near $100 but no choice on that either.

You know (reading your mind) enough about now do the $$ math on what's worth it with all consideration not to kill yourself with very dangerous tool - the torches,

Tom

Re: rear wheel axle stuck on hub Sign In

I just don't understand why you are trying to hammer it in. I wouldn't be surprised if the axle is just bottomed out.

Just go rent a 10lb slide hammer and pull the hub out.

Re: rear wheel axle stuck on hub Sign In

Hi Tom, I was a auto body tech for 40 years. I am familiar with gas welding and cutting, mig and tig. I have a friend who owns a shop and he will let me borrow his torches if need be. I haven't started any big fires yet (just some small ones). There is a rental place near me so I'll try there first they might have a small set. I'll take it slow, think it out, measure twice cut once. Again thanks for your help and time. I'll let you know how this all turns out.

Re: rear wheel axle stuck on hub Sign In

NO!!!!!

That's what I'm telling you not to do! You could end up smashing the differential housing if that axle is bottomed out. I'm sure you have already ruined the axle shaft with the hammer.

The axle has no room to move back. You have to pull the hub out using a slide hammer. Of course remove the bolts first.

Re: rear wheel axle stuck on hub Sign In

Gary - sorry to think too much the worst. Hammer's right to try the heaviest slide hammer. Ask around you about rentals as well. Not legal to rent flipping tools in some places?? Find out. Autozone boasts it, now I do see most other chain outlets as well? 100% deposit for return FREE then.

Go for it, nothing to lose now but it doesn't work PB does like time if that,

Tom
(edit more) THE TERM/TOOL IS [>SLIDE HAMMER< - ARE WE TALKING THE TOOL THAT COMES TO MIND?
