Carbon Canister Problem Sign In

Just bought an 81 Dodge Ram 50 custom 2.0 L truck in excellent condition except for problems with charcoal leeching out of the gas vapor canister. I can't locate a replacement canister and was advised not to try and bypass or seal it off by the parts stores. The canister has an vented bottom with a visible filter, but the bottom retainer is glued permanent like.
Tempted to disassemble and jerry rig a filter in the top with cloth because of visible carbon dust in the line to the carb, but I don't know how it's constructed inside or if it is serviceable.

Any advice appreciated.

No, the cannister is not serviceable, other than replacing the filter. If the carbon particles make their way into the carburetor, you'll have some more problems. I wasn't able to find a replacement cannister through Dodge or CarQuest. Might try the internet.

Re: Carbon Canister Problem Sign In

Thanks Loren, that's where I'm at searching for a replacement online with no results. I'm thinking of taking the darn thing out of the loop on the safe side because the previous owner my brother ended up replacing the carb and had problems with the fuel filter clogging. I'm thinking as long as I let filtered air into the purge hose I can seal off the vapor lines from the tank and carb and at least keep the coal dust out of everything until I find a replacement.
