clutch problem
|
|
|
Hello, I recently bought a 1990 Nissan pickup 4 cyclinder manual 5 speed. Today I drove to work without issue but after work I got into my car and when I went to depress the clutch it was already sitting on the floor. I have read that the clutch fluid and brake fluid on these cars is the same and every couple of days I need to top up the resevoir. I also notice when the truck sits for a while i need to pump the clutch a couple of times before I can put it into gear. . I am wondering if maybe it just drained and I need to let fluid get into the system again. I topped it up and left it for the night at work. I'm going to see if that's the issue but if it isn't does anyone have any suggestions? Is there anyway to force fluid into the system if it is completely drained? Thanks for your help.

Hydraulic clutch linkage and brakes USUALLY use the same type of fluid and also usually totally separate systems. You have a leak OR a failure of hydraulic clutch linkage. There is a master cylinder for it, flex hose and metal line on down to a slave cylinder and the mechanical parts they move to release clutch for shifting. Since pumping it up allows it to work it suggests master or slave cylinder has failed even if not leaking. You need to figure out which or at the age do both if reasonable. Bleeding these out is the common issue for many DIYers. You decided if it's something you can and want to do yourself or send the problem out. Can help from here but limited to your tools and understanding of how it works also, T

If you are adding fluid to the clutch master cylinder reservoir, you have a leak in the hydraulic system. Look underneath the dash where the clutch master linkage connects to the clutch pedal assembly. Look for brake fluid leaking out where the shaft comes through the firewall. The slave cylinder is bolted to the bell housing. If it is leaking, it will be obvious. Also inspect for leaking rusted out clutch lines and hoses. If you are adding fluid to the master cylinder for the brakes, you need to pull the wheels and inspect for leaking wheel cylinders, calipers, hoses, or lines. As Tom stated the brake and clutch systems are not tied into each other. On some vehicles the clutch and brakes may share the same reservoir, but yours doesn't. It is leaking inside. I see it on the floor mats and having it sit for the night it drained half of the resevoir. Is it possible that air got in the system from draining completely and I have to bleed it?

Oh sorry I missed the first post. I will try bleeding it tomorrow when it stops raining. I'm just trying to do everything I can before having to take it into the shop. Thank you.

No,no, no. If you have a leak, you have to replace that component, then bleed the system. You can't do anything with a leaking clutch master. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Okay thank you. Any idea how much ballpark a master cylinder would cost?

They aren't real expensive. Most are well under $100 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I'm still a little confused. If it is leaking inside the car by the pedals is it the slave cylinder? Because I don't see any leakage around the master cylinder.

If the fluid is near the firewall, it's the master.

? You are seeing fluid inside and on mats plus losing fluid. Master cyl. can do that as Hammer Time said. YOU said it was also raining so just know that the fluid (DOT 3 Brake Fluid) usually, will wash away with plain water. If somehow an oil is wouldn't so you know for sure, T

Excellent. Ya - I'd probably just do the slave just anyway at that age unless absolutely sure it was good and you just said it wasn't so good luck with that too, T
