Looking for opinions: Did I fix things in time?

2010 Scion xD, automatic, 270K

Had accident last January where right front suspension was damaged. Repaired by professional shop.

Last Friday my check engine light went on (first time). Within 5 miles I was at the dealer. Dealer said tranny was 'bone dry.' He said I needed to replace tranny ($5000). I then informed him that I had seen no puddles or drips, and showed him a pic of the accident. Re-examination found tool marks on front axle and substantial leak where axle entered tranny. (Shop had refilled the fluid, may have overfilled). Minor residue on exhaust pipe where fluid had burned after being thrown.

Car ran fine over the weekend (lots of miles). Today the body shop that had done the accident repair replaced the axle and seal. Car runs like a frisky pony now!

My question: Did the warning light and prompt repair save me, or is this one of those deals where the light comes on AFTER damage has occurred?

Driving it is the only way you are going to find out. I don't trust this dealer too much. First off, if the transmission was actually empty, you wouldn't have been able to drive it at all. They had no reason to jump to the conclusion that the transmission was shot unless they were basing that on the mileage. At that mileage, the car doesn't owe you anything.

Thank you for the quick reply.

This car is the first car I bought new. Unlike my earlier cars, this one has been so reliable that I enjoy driving. That little light coming on shook me up.

I tend to be easy on my cars. I dream of putting a million miles on it.
