2001 Toyota RAV4 2.0/I-4; 150,000 miles Update. Evidently, there was a class action suit that was settled on January 6, 2012 that covers RAV4 "model year 2001 through 2003 Toyota RAV4 equipped with an automatic transmission" for "a harsh shift condition of the automatic transmission and/or illumination of the Malfunction Indicator Light (check engine light) with the following computer codes: P0750, P0753, P0755, P0758, and/or P1760." "Toyota will continue to provide a warranty enhancement to any Class Member, for a period of ten (10) years or 150,000 miles from the Class Vehicle’s in-service date, whichever occurs first." The car has fewer than 150,000 miles on it and is still at the dealer's. I have a call in to the dealer. It seems Toyota has been reluctant to replace the ECMs. Hopefully, this has a happy ending. Original post: This car would not get out of 1st gear, and we had it towed to the dealer. The dealer said the problem is either with the transmission computer or the transmission itself. If it's the computer, we'll replace it. If it's the transmission, we'll sell the car. The dealer said the only way to find the problem is to replace the transmission computer. If the computer is not the problem, we have to pay the $1100 for the computer – they can't take it back and give us partial or full credit, even though the computer may have been in the car only for a few minutes. Is it true that the dealer can't determine in advance if it's the computer or the transmission that needs replacing? Thank you

With proper troubleshooting you can determine if a PCM or the transmission is faulty or if the PCM caused a transmission to go bad. Seems they don't mind guessing if your money is the one paying for it. Why should you have to pay because they can't figure out if a PCM is causing a transmission problem? They are supposed to be factory trained certified technicians. If I did that to a customer at my shop, I'd get told to f off and they would go elsewhere. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
