Transmission problem Sign In

I have a 2002 Ford escort zx2 manual transmission. When pressing the clutch it did not spring back like usual and as a result I could not get it into gear however I finally got into gear but it didn't sound as it should have. I attempted to limp home but once again the clutch gave out unable to get it back into gear. I assume its the master or slave cylinder for the clutch but im not quite sure what might cause the sounds or if it's related or unrelated but it occurred at the same time. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

#1 - Don't drive it or try to hard to force it like this as you will cause damage on top of the problem.

Checks - tests: Is there proper fluid and level in the reservoir to master cylinder and if not where did it go/leak?
If fine I would look under the dash where it all pivots and works there if all is in place and again under hood for where slave cylinder pushes.
If all that shows normal you are right - probably failed master or slave cylinder or a flex hose in between. You could try to plug off master to see if it can hold pressure to pick which one but think the slave cylinder is more likely so far,
