Toyota Tercel 1993, 120K . I have intermittent problems shifting into a gear. At times a complete lock in neutral, at higher speeds. The worst gear shifting into is from second into third . While I shift, and I am then neutral , I cannot go into the next gear, the third, it simply stops. It only happens when driving and it seems to happen especially when driving faster. It also happens easier after I have driven for a while . Shifting is easy ,when car is stopped . By now I have also problems shifting into first gear and an complete stop in neutral has occurred from 5 th into 4 th on freeway I used to drive by the side of the road even when on freeway , stop and then shift. That worked I was basically reducing speed, and clutching again. Which one helped, I do not knowI have tried it now with double clutching as I learned about that . I have not had a major event with the gears yet, just small problem not being able to shift into third and first gear , double clutching and slowing down, while in neutral, helped . When I double clutch, I obviously l do both, I clutch and reduce speed. I am afraid of driving in general now, especially on the freeway . This complete lock in neutral at high speeds when shifting is simply too dangerous. Recently I brought the car to the mechanic . The mechanic did not experience the problem, as it happens intermittent. He thought it was the clutch and replaced the mechanical clutch, not slave and master cylinder. ( By the way, the complete clutch with slave and master cylinder was just done 4 years ago, maybe it was a bad job?) This repair now of the mechanical clutch did not resolve my problem. How can I figure out, whether this is the hydraulic clutch, or a problem with the transmission. The problem is the mechanic will have a hard time diagnosing the problem when it does not happen while he is driving the car . I do not want to replace part after part, sort of trial and error.

Just some things to check till our site's trans Guru comes by: Check motor mounts and all that hold engine steady in place. Check trans oil level - not sure if a bolt on side or exactly what but check that or get that checked. If low find out why. Shifting issues that are intermittent and double clutching (if we mean the same thing) can help is usually a clutch the isn't disengaging properly or at all and hydraulic ones can do that either leaking or not either master or slave cylinder or a flex hose problem. If intermittent and no leaks will be tough to know which is at fault if working when checked out. No harm IMO in lubing any visual shifter linkage just because under hood where things move, T

Hello, The way i normally tell if i have a clutch or transmission issue, is when the problem happens(cant do this on the freeway)and you cant shift from neutral or shift into the next gear, pull over and shut the car off, if it goes right in, you may have a clutch problem, if it doesnt go right in you have a trans problem. How does the clutch pedal feel? How far off the floor does the pedal engage the clutch? reservoir full? Gary
