Hi! I’ve got a 2004 Ford F-150 with the 5.4L. The fluid was black before changing it and had a bad smell. I changed it last night as well as the filter and pan gasket, took it out for a drive and checked the dipstick this morning. The fluid level is okay, but the fluid is the exact same color of black as it was before. I’m thinking that I should do a fluid flush... but my dad has read from Quora (seriously?!?!) that I should just leave it... but I’m not buying it. What is your opinion?

Site has a trans specialist will be by for a final reason. I'll bother to say you didn't change it all, maybe 1/3rd so what did you expect? Black with odor for ATF is never a good thing but you already knew that I hope, T

Hello, Trans in the truck should be a 4R70W , Holds about 12 or so quarts, has a pretty big converter, when dropping the pan, your only getting about 5 or so quarts out so it very well may still be dark, may have to swap it out a few times before it looks clean, but if the fluid is dark and the trans is slipping, fluid change will not help. I think I'm just going to leave it for now until something happens. The tranny is shifting OK right now, although it always hesitates to shift into reverse but is fine otherwise.
