Transfer Case or Transmission problem???

I just acquired a 94 model F150 XLT which was stuck in 4 lo. I managed to fix the fact it wouldn t shift through the 4WD at the shifter but when I get it into 4 Hi it is OK until you try to go up through the gears. It seems to just disconnect from the transmission itself (doesn t make a noise like its fallen out of gear, just revs and doesn t bite). I can go through the gears in 4 lo so I don t understand what the problem is. Is it a transfer case issue or a transmission issue... Any ideas/information would be much appreciated. Body style: REGULAR CAB PICKUP 2-DR Brake - front: Disc Brake - rear: Drum Driveline: 4WD Engine series: V-8 5.0L Engine type: V8, 5.0L Fuel tank: 18.20 gallon / 68.9 liter Fuel type: Gasoline Safety restraints: Driver airbag, active belts Tires: 235/75R15 Trim level: S Reg. Cab Short Bed 4WD

OK - So you just got this and it was stuck in 4WD lo. What did you do that fixed that with the shifter I take it type on the floor? Not my strong suit but don't think the selector is adjusted properly so far and might be too close to plain "N" where you get nothing, T

it goes into 4hi and 2wd but whenever you shift gears from 1st to 2nd it misses and just goes into neutral gear.

Ok, so this shifts 1st to 2nd and when it should go into 3rd it goes into neutral? if so, you have a trans problem. Gary

It only slips out of gear when in 4hi and 2wd. I can go up and down in 4lo with no problems. I just took it down the road and got it into 4hi and 2wd. Got all the way up through 4th but as soon as I got to the end of the road and had to stop it completely lost and gearing at all.

As a test when it stops moving im assuming you also have no reverse, turn the car off for about 3 minutes, than start it back up again and see what you have. Gary

Doesnt seem to do much. Still have to take it back to 4lo to get moving again. After running it for a while in 4lo I can put it back into 4hi and get movement sometimes, just not every time and again just until it decides to stop again

You stated you just acquired this. Did you ask the previous owner why the transfer case was stuck in 4 lo before you got it? Which transmission does this have? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

It was sold to a dealer and he didn't know why it was this way apparently. I'm not sure what transmission it has, stick shift obviously but that's all I know sorry. Yeah sad it probably just needs a new transfer case as that's where the grinding sound seems to come from when it slips out of gear

Well, if you can shift through all gears without it neutraling out in 4 LO and you know the clutch isn't slipping, your probably right that there is something going awry in the transfer case. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Would the transfer case cause a grinding sound and slipping out of gear? I mean would it be something worth rebuilding or just get a new transfer case

Honestly, your probably better off getting another one. It would probably be cheaper in the long run. If you find one in a salvage yard, make sure it comes with some type of warranty. There are three possibilities of transfer cases. Is this electronic or manual type transfer case? I know where I can get one for around 100/150 dollars. Does that seem like a fair price for one? I'm very new to trucks and 4wd so I have no idea on these things

Yeah stand shift. Both transmission and transfer case are manual operated

Sure a transfer case can jump out and grind. Could be an issue with the shift linkage not being adjusted correctly, drive shaft slip yokes being dried up and not sliding, trans mount that is broken and allowing the transfer case to jump up and knock it out of a shift mode, and/or something internal; i.e. bad sliding clutch hub or gear clutch teeth damaged. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I've got this far, just wondering how do you disconnect the rear drive shaft. Do I have to undo the 4 bolts at the back axle? Any ideas?

Mark the drive shaft and pinion flange with paint or something, so they line back up the same way you take them off. Then remove the bolts holding the drive shaft to the rear end pinion flange. Once you get that undone, slide the drive shaft out of the transfer case. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Another quick question in case someone can tell me. Got everything put back on and everything works in terms of the transfer case itself. Only thing now is i have no 4wd indication on the dashboard and i have no idea where the vent hose needs to connect to. The new transfer case didn't even have the hose attached and my old one was broken off.

Is it in fact going into 4wd since theres no light on the dash? I believe there should be a little vent tube that the rubber hose attaches onto, do you see a small metal or plastic vent tube sticking out anywhere?

Its all shifting into and out of 4wd perfectly. I figure the switch itself is just broken and needs replacing. The metal vent is all I have. No hose attached to it. if i get a hose where does it connect to? or does it just vent to no where?
