Slip Bridge? What is that? It's coming out! Sign In

Hello! my first post here, looking for help.

The other day my car started vibrating at low speeds, always has shifted a bit erratic but based on research I thought that was a fairly common thing in toyotas.
I have a 2006 solara sle v6 , about 128k miles

I brought it to the mechanic, he said his computer was showing it was getting confused, shifting between 1, 3, 2, 4, overdrive, back down, etc. in weird orders, sounded like a sensor problem but he is not a transmission guy and recommended we take it to a transmission shop.

I took it to the transmission shop and explained the issue, he ran his diagnostic on it and said its not the sensor , but that the "slip bridge" ? is coming out and would need to rebuild the transmission.

My question is what is a slip bridge, because i googled it and found nothing relevant to cars/transmissions. husband said something about drive bridge but all i can find in the internet is stuff about driving on bridges and slipping.
Is this diagnosis a common or accurate one, or something that anyone here may be familiar with? and would it really require an entire overhaul?

How much should it cost to rebuild the transmission? he says 2100 which sounds fair, but if its a problem that could be addressed without rebuilding , obviously i would prefer that because we are kind of broke.

Thanks!

I think you should try another transmission shop for a second opinion and you should take someone along with you that is kind of familiar with vehicles. Sounds like he is trying to give you the slip bridge.

Really? damn. I thought maybe at best it was just a louisiana slang term for something common...

I don't know if he said "slip bridge" "shift bridge" or drive bridge, or could it be that he said disk instead of bridge, would that make sense??
either way something was a bridge or a disk and it is coming out, what could possibly be coming out of my transmission that would require a rebuild?

and if that is not the case, then based on my symptoms, is there anything else that it could be possibly that I should look into?
We've looked into the TPS , and throttle body being dirty.. could it just be gunk in there making it sticky/sludgy?
or could something else be coming out that would require getting into it?

thanks for your response!

Maybe he meant friction discs were slipping? You should have him write down his diagnosis. You really don't want to go spend 2 grand without knowing exactly what the culprit and correction is. Just don't want to see you get taken to the cleaners. You can always get a second opinion.

Hello,
Ok, you have the U151(automatic 5 speed) common issues with this unit are, input speed sensor(i just did 2 in the last 2 weeks) also solenoids are a big problem on this transmission. I always change 4 solenoids on this trans at about 100 each, to me 2100 is a good price(not sure what he is going to do for that) my price starts at 2800 for this unit, do you know if there are any codes? is your check engine light on? For any of those other problems, would it require a rebuild?
I've done regular maintenance , transmission fluid has been changed as well, but did notice a tiny bit leaking not too long ago, and topped it off recently after that. hadn't noticed any more leaking, maintenance light was on, no codes but i am not sure if i would know if there were?
$2100 probably because of the sheer amount of salvage parts available in the area, or because he was lying and not really going to do anything at all? heh

but even the toyota dealership's price to replace the transmission altogether was 2400+tax, so i guess its not that far off at all

slip bridge? - maybe the term was SLIPPAGE ?
suggest you scan for codes AND get a second opinion from an independent transmission specialist - NOT aamco type

Nobody told me about any codes,
the vibrating on acceleration only happened when hot, after driving for about an hour.
It feels okay when cool and at normal city speeds, not highway... but has a tendency to shift erratic at slower speeds while getting up to speed.

the shop i did take it to was a small independent shop, not aamco type,
others have suggested i take it to a big box place with salaried employees because their motivations are different, where as the independent shops motivation is to rebuild everyone's transmission.

on another note, when i picked up the car from the shop i asked them how much i owed them for the diagnosis and they said , "no worries i understand if you can't afford it yet"
and let me go on my way, which gave me mixed signals like maybe they weren't trying to make up fake problems for me or maybe its just part of a long game. hah. i don't know.

also definitely didn't say slippage, i've thought of all possibilities but none of them fit.

if it was slippage , then his statement would have been, " the problem is in your transmission, it's the slippage, its coming out, and the only way to fix it is to rebuild the transmission"

I did , thanks to you all confirming my suspicion about the elusive "slip bridge" brought to you by MTV's Scooby-Doo My Ride.
They are checking it out now. Says he noticed a leak in the pan, and replaced all the seals and its running fine, running diagnostics now just to check for anything else but he thinks it may just be that
