Shift Indicator Issue On New Trans Rebuild

My son and I have worked on many car problems and decided to try a rebuild on his 2008 GP 4t65e. We spent a month with rebuild, replacing everything including a Transgo shift kit and all upgrades. We followed Tech Manual to the T and felt like it was a success. After re installing into car we are having SHIFT INDICATION issue. I will try to list our observation concerning what is or is not happening. 1 Installed the rebuilt trans 2 Added 13 quarts Dexron VI 3 Shift lever will not indicate car is in appropriate position, when position goes into indent it will indicate nothing. 4 Unhooked shift cable and hand shifted transmission at firewall area, Park position would not allow start , Reverse should be first indent from Park, Neutral should be the next indent 5 To start, shift selector had to be held between the indents, balancing between appropriate location to indicate RNDM position on heads up display. I guess the simple explanation would be all the gear selection are between the indents. Our initial thoughts were it simply needs a shift cable adjustment but soon realized you cant adjust it to stay on the top side between indents. 6 After starting and hand selecting, while holding selector by hand , transmission was cycled thru all gears, All Forward, Reverse and Tap Shift worked smooth and correct. Additional Information 7 The above observations were done with the existing/original TCM. This TCM would allow taking shift lever out of Park position without pressing on brake, but it would show the gear selection on heads up display only if you carefully balance selector as explained above. 8 We then replaced with a NEW TCM. This new TCM did require pressing brake to move shift lever out of Park but would never show any gear selection on heads up display using the same hand holding selector method and we could not start car. 9 Car is on jack stands, with CV hubs only thing turning. Didnt want to put it all back in case cover has to come off, We did plug in brake system to rid of warning. Questions 10 We think this is a TCM flashing issue, does it need to be re flashed/ programmed to correct this issue. 11 That plastic transmission indicator sensor located with the metal shifter indent and roller setup never seemed like it was tough enough but we checked thoroughly before reassembly and the wiring harness fit it perfectly, could this be an issue. 11 Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any help and have a great evening.

Gary, Thank you for the reply. Thats exactly what we did wrong. I did a lot of reading and there was a tech bulletin indicating exactly what you said. We were always a little concerned about that setup. I forgot that I took a picture before we put case on. There is was, put indent roller in front of the slot in the plastic sensor. It made total sense explaining how it was so out of sync. This leads to another few questions. We still have all the suspension out of car. My questions are. Is it possible to gain enough access to fix without dropping frame. Maybe undo motor mounts and back frame bolts almost out, force engine as far as possible to passenger side and open case without removing case. Im thinking I could create an inch or two at the shift arm area. The other question, assuming I can gain this opening, do you believe the fork shaped roller assembly can be hooked, pulled up and move the sensor under it to proper position without removing small bolt attachment or without breaking it. If not we will remove trans or try dropping frame down on driver side. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and again Thanks for knowing exactly what the issue was, Have a great evening HRTULL

Hello, Not sure if just pulling the mounts out will give enough clearance, drivers side frame my have to be lowered, but support the engine from the oil pan so you can adjust how low to go. As far as the detent goes, i would loosen it and see if you can get it into position, the mode switch is plastic so i would be careful. Gary

World Series slowed down our progress this week. We are going to correct the issue this weekend. I will let you know what was required to access the point of repair. We feel lucky we dont have to dig deep into the unit. It will be several hours for a couple of minutes of repair but we dont get too upset about it. Thanks again for your help and suggestions, have a great day, HRTULL

Gary, Fixed the problem. In the event someone else does this here is the way we fixed it. 1 Disconnect Battery 2 Removed starter and left connection intact. 3 Removed exhaust crossover for working room. 4 Loosened pan bolt to drain fluid. 5 After draining re torqued bolts, placed floor jack with plywood under pan and some jack stands under frame 6 Removed trans wiring harness 7 Loosened 4 frame bolts but did not remove. 8 Loosened all motor mount bolts. 9 Forced engine to passenger side with a 2x4 block to hold 10 This created about a 2 inch place between case and fender well 11 Removed driver side motor mount 12 removed all case cover bolts 13 opened case to reveal shift indent and plastic sensor, this created plenty of room but not enough for 2 hands to fit and manipulate, 14 looped a long nylon string around spring indent roller 15 looped long nylon string around plastic sensor behind green wire connector 16 One person pulled roller back, other person pulled sensor into position. Issue resolved, reversed assembly, all good to go, about 4 hours without any big rush. Road tested and all seems to be in good order. Time to go split wood now, Hey thanks for your help, HRTULL
