Not hitting high gear Sign In

1996 Chevrolet S-10, 4 wheel drive. Automatic transmission.

I recently had my transmission flushed and was getting a lot of smoke coming from that area. I took it back to the shop and the guy told me that the fluid was really low so he put some more in and everything seemed fine.

About a week later, it started smoking again. I popped the hood and found a tube next to the transmission fluid dipstick that had a cap attached to it but the cap was not on. I put the cap back on and the smoking stopped. Everything seemed fine. Until yesterday...

Now it seems that I cannot get into a high gear. I can feel it shift into 2nd, and then at around 40mph I cannot get any faster. The tachometer goes thru the roof when I try.

If I'm in D or OD, I cannot even get that high. If I shift it into 2 myself, I can get around 40-45mph.

I'm not really good with cars. My step-father is, but he recently had a heart attack and I don't want to ask him to do anything. Worst case scenario, maybe he can talk me through what to do and I can be his hands... What I'm really hoping for is if someone can tell me if this could be something simple (and cheap) like a filter or something or if I'm looking at a new/rebuild transmission?

Thank you.
