My 1993 4-Runner won't shift into gear. Sign In

Just bought this4- Runner that needed the third member replaced. I. Replaced it but now it won't go into gear. It does go into 4-wheel drive, but only front wheels. But nothing going to the rear in or out of 4-wheel drive. Where do I go next?

What do you mean a "third member" and what did you do to replace it?

Third member dropout meaning the differential housing that holds the ring and pinion gears and which the rear axels connect to

Moved the thread to transmission section awaiting site's specialist. I have no clue what you may have screwed up or what failed to have only FWD now, nothing without requesting it short of a total transfer case failure or differential. Probably not even splined in? I personally don't call those a "member" but what they are,

Can you tell us why you replaced the rear differential? Is this a manual or automatic transmission? Can you provide more information as to what you mean it won't go into gear?

Manual transmission. I bought this 4-Runner that had a broken pinion shaft. Come to find out after removing third member dropout that the tapered roller bearing that rides on the pinion shaft came apart and they started bouncing around until a couple got wedged between the ring and pinion gears causing the pinion shaft to break in half. Put new 4:56 gears in but when I put it in gear and release the clutch nothing happens. Should I check fluid levels in tranny and transfer case. I'm kinda lost here

If you can lock the front axle and engage 4wd, can you drive it? If you can drive it, that would tell you about the condition of the transmission and clutch. If you have the transfer case in neutral, can you rotate the rear drive shaft with the wheels on the ground?

Yes, I can put into 4-low and it goes forward and reverse, but ad soon as I take it out of 4- wheel drive it goes nowhere.

Do you mean rotate the driveshaft without the rear wheels moving? When I rotate it with transfer case innuetral the rear wheels move

Can you put the transfer case into neutral and rotate the rear drive shaft by hand with the wheels on the ground?

If you spin the rear drive shaft do the rear wheels turn?

More than likely the problem is in the transfer case. Make sure that the transfer case shift linkage is good and goes through all positions.

Sounds like the rear diff is ok, wondering when the diff broke if something snapped inside unit. When you put the trans in gear and it wont move, does the speedometer move?
