Infrequent Transmission Problem Sign In

We have a 1993 Oldsmobile Ciera with 162,000 Kilometers. The motor is a 3.3L V6 with an automatic transmission. The car has power steering, brakes and air conditioning, front wheel drive. For the past year or so the transmission has been giving us some problems that happen infrequently. For example the problem appeared once in the last two hundred kilometers.

As I said the problem appears occasionally, for example when you start the car and place it into gear, either forward or reverse sometimes the transmission will not engage. If you wait a minute or two and leave it in gear the transmission will engage. If you rev up the motor it will engage. This also happens when you come to a stop, the transmission will slip out of gear and if wait or rev the motor it will engage again. This also happens when turn a corner, the transmission will slip out of gear and if you wait or rev the motor it will engage again. I have also noticed that when the car should be shifting from a lower to a higher gear it will occasionally stay in the lower gear.

The transmission fluid is not low or smell burnt. I have had it at two transmission repair places and the technicians took the car for a drive and the problem did not appear. The transmission does not have any noticeable leaks. The transmission was flushed and fluid changed about 20,000 kilometers ago.

Could you offer any advice or suggestions on what I could do to try to discover or correct the problem?

Thanks,
Quick Fix

Re: Infrequent Transmission Problem Sign In

Sounds like the front pump is leaking down at low rpm and can't make the pressure needed to actuate changes. You may describe your trouble with a tranny tech and get them to do just a front pump but I think most will suggest the total overhaul at the kms you have,
