My '88 f150 won't fully engage reverse unless the transfer case is in neutral, otherwise it just lightly touches the gear. I could use some help with this. please?

OK, Site's pro is Gary hasn't been by but will? I'll try some more. When shifter pops back out of gear was it in "reverse" like if you held it there? Been ages there are "detents" that hold gears engaged now IDK if those are serviceable or not for that. Most I know of are not "synchro" in or for reverse now are in all forwards gears so "self" mesh - you feel that. Not reverse as you are supposed to be stopped I hope or it would seriously object, grind sounds can't be good if you or at age now another before you? Owned and drove countless ones if a clutch didn't disengage troubles harder for "non-synchro" gears once 1st and reverse both. It could be worn out meaning the shafts. TMK would take dismantling it to be sure! Other is ask for an in person check at a shop that does this it's on it's own for general auto repair if only the time and space it takes up when other work is waiting. That's the problem where I am too costly to just let it sit waiting parts, another whole one already done a maybe. This should be easily recognized if witnessed in person by a tech who does this also if chronic for this exact one and what's done about it. 4X4 complicates it as for trucks it must have whole high and low ranges for all gears as a choice is a lot going on to be able to do that. That's it, in person will get you an answer the web is going to fail unless it's a well known issue with this exact one and not many were made TMK. Hope it's fixable at this age a problem to find used I'm sure, Tom
