Broken shift cable, $ 400 dollar replacement?!

I recently ran into some gear shifting problems, culminating in a complete inability to get out of park. I checked around under the hood, and found that the shifter cable in my Toyota Rav4 (2004) snapped where it attaches to the lever. I'm not a handy man and can't think of a way to reattach it. So instead I had my friend flick the lever into drive and I took it to a mechanic. He later calls me up and says the shifter cable replacement from Toyota will cost $ 400, and it will be an addiitional $ 300 in labour for a total of $700. I thought cables were around $ 400. Where can I find out how much a replacement part actually costs? I can't seem to find the code for the piece and I've never bought a replacement part. Any help is great thanks!

I think you should call around some other shops in your area and get another quote. The labor for both sides of the cable is 0.9 hrs. If the labor is 0.9hr to do both ends and they are charging you $300 in labor, that means their labor rate is $333/hour. That is way high. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
