I just changed the fuel pump on a 98 Blazer. After dropping it off the jack stands, it started just fine. When I got in to test drive, it won't shift out of Park. I'm depressing the brake with no luck. Chilton's doesn't cover anything about this in the manual. No previous problems with the tranny. Any idea?

You need to know brake lights work first but can drive it now by turning key towards ignition but not quite there and shift into "N" then it will start and can go until you shift back into "P" again. Near sure brake light switch if lights don't work is where it gets the signal to release not wiring out back near gas tank - not certain if it an detect no lighting if you unplugged wiring while doing fuel pump if that could happen? T - First thing I checked was the brake lights, working fine. I also tried turning the key halfway to ignition but shifter still wouldn't move. When I changed fuel pump I did replace the wiring harness instead of using old one. I've checked and rechecked to make sure it was wired back properly but can't imagine how that would affect anything. I'm totally lost.

! OK - Some coincidence that I can't think of a reason for? Try again with key in different locations towards IGN for now. If this persists guess I'd look down at brake light switch anyway for something wrong then have to probably blame an actuator that unlocks it from Park? Never had one bust that way so can't expound too much? I own a similar vehicle and age now and going to go test it without hitting brake pedal and see how that works and probably bust mine too to find out! Perhaps another here knows of the problem better, So far I don't, T

Just tested my own without hitting brake pedal as a test - it worked and allowed starting (is yours starting?) and then shift. Gave me one more shift out of park without brake while running then next it didn't? I don't know what GM's plan really was. Is this somehow on a slope now or something? Some vehicles you could never shift out of park if you didn't set parking brake while in neutral - steep grades where you shouldn't have been doing a fuel pump job on anyway? Test something just for laughs. Just setting there can you push this thing with parking brake off a little each way now such that park "pawl" in trans is holding but would have some play to rock vehicle, not that much. If that went AFUed somehow I don't know why now. General: When something is that coincidental go recheck where you were working for what might have happened, T
