95 buick park ave. trans prob.?

95 buick park ave. trans prob.? Sign In

Buick park ave has developed a problem of vibrating roughly at low rpm. This is especially bad when cruising at 50-55mph at 1800rpm. The engine rpm drops to 1500 rpm, kinda feels like a downshift and the vibration increases dramatically. Acceleration increase to above 1800rpm relieves vibration. I have checked resistance in injectors, put new spark plugs in and replaced fuel filter. The problem seemed to appear just after a routine engine oil change at a shop. They checked it out and said it was nothing they did. No vacuum hoses bumped loose etc..
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hello,
If this is a trans problem, it sounds like it may be chattering as it goes into lock-up. When the trans goes into lock-up(converter locks to engine rotation) you will get a 200 to 300 rpm drop. I would also check for codes, and make sure there is no engine miss. A lock-up chatter and engine miss while driving are very similar. People come into my trans shop thinking they have a problem when its really an engine issue. Gary

Just to add, if this is indeed a misfire issue during lockup, focus on the ignition system. Secondary side ignition problems such as plug wire issues and weak coils could cause that.

Another trick is to brake torque the engine to see if it starts skipping. Don't brake torque for too long because it will overheat the torque converter and fluid.

I took 95 buick park ave. to autozone and o'reilly's. Both said they can't scan the older car codes. They say gm changed with with 96 model year. OBD1 to OBD2. It is my girl friends car and she does not have the $75 at present time to have local dealer run the codes.
I assume that brake torquing the engine is holding the brake on while accelerating at the same time? I will give that a try to see what happens. I appreciate the input. I use the computer at the library to access this site so I might not respond in timely manner.. If and when I resolve issue I'll be sure to post outcome. Any additional input is welcome. Thank you.

These places wouldn't know IMO. 95 Buicks in particular could be either OBD I or OBD II and nice to know which this one is. If the older just a paper clip and think you need a special adaptor to read OBD II codes for just that year and just Buicks!


This kinda sounds like an engine thing not trans? Look - if coils are right up front and you did get them really soaked - puddle or water suddenly for any reason they probably could mess up. Wherever they are placed they don't want sudden water.


If so hope you can just mist them and see stray sparks (arcing) which would act up more under some load like when trans shifts or locks up in to overdrive or as DS said put a load on it without overheating, hood open with helper fighting brakes in gear which is dangerous too so AYOR or find someone to do that safely as car could take off on you. PARKING BRAKE IS NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO DO THAT ALONE! It would just pull back wheels like a cat in heat!

Paper clip trick won't work on that year. That was the transition year as they were going over to OBD2. You need an enhanced scan tool, tech1A, or tech 2 to get into the puter on that one.
