It is really hard to shift out of park. It doesn't want to move. Once you get it out of park it is fine. I'm not sure why it is doing this. I hope the tranny isn't going out. Someone please help me out.
Thanks,
Jon

There's a system to NOT let you get out of park without foot on brake pedal. If a switch doesn't sense that it's real hard. In Fords they use the brake light switch - don't know for GM but I would check if brakes lights work, Hope it's just that simple,

Another possibility is that you've spilled too many Cokes into the console. They'll really gum up the works. A penetrant/cleaner such as WD-40 or PB Blaster works pretty good at freeing up cables and such.

The break lights seem to work fine.

You might be right about the coke .... well sorta. I really do think it is something sticky in there. You said to spray some wd-40 or something like that on there. Do you just take the center console out and spray in rigtht below the shifter in that area or ... ? I just wanted to make sure before a take apart the center console.
Thanks,
Jon

WD-40 is generally harmless and can be cleaned up with window cleaner if overspray gets around. Hope that works before you have to take things apart,

Test the operation of the shifter lock system. With the key off, you should not be able to depress the shifter lock button under your thumb on the shifter. Key on engine off, depress the brake pedal slightly. You should hear a click in the console as the locking solenoid operates. You should then be able to depress the thumb button on the shifter. If not, electrical problems are also a possibility. If it is possible but difficult, a gooped-up mechanism is probable. If console dis-assembly is necessary, remove the horseshoe clip from the front of the shifter knob and remove the knob. Most console covers will unclip with a small screwdriver, but check for hidden screws anyway. Underneath ashtrays and drink holders are good places to look. Work the cover up and over the parking brake handle, if applicable. Disconnect wiring as necessary. After you've cleaned out all the candy wrappers and cigarette butts you'll probably find 2 or 3 dollars in change. Ignore them as they're probably too gunked up to spend. Now you're ready to observe the shifter operation and make a diagnosis. Let us know what you find.

Re: 95 Pontiac Firebird auto trouble shifting from park Sign In

Well now I am running into other problems with the transmission. In the mornings now when I go to leave the car does not want to go. You floor the gas and you go really slow. Once the car warms up though it is fine though. The car also wants to slip in and out of gears sometimes. I do not really know a lot about transmissions. I am planning on taking it somwhere to get looked at, but I wanted to see exactly what I will be looking at. Does this sound like I need a new transmission or is it fixable? Someone please help me out with this!!!
Thanks,
Jon

Sounds pretty bad. Let a pro check it out. It might be repairable short of a major rebuild. Good luck.

Look at the color of trans fluid. If NOT clearly red (put it white paper or cloth) it's a clear sign of real trans trouble! Hey - it's only money! Hope it's not the whole thing but sounds like it., Tom
