4l60E shift problem

Having problems with my transmission shifting out of overdrive after driving it about 5 to 7 miles. Tried stopping and restarting and manually shifting and that doesn't help . If the truck sits for a while it will shift normal until that 5 to 7 mile mark. Checked fluids and looks good doesn't smell burnt . Any help on this would be great. Thanks.

Im sorry. The truck just loses overdrive. All other gears seem to be fine. I can hear a little grinding noise at low speed when this happens. It is a 1996 4x4 z71.

Ok, so its shifts ok 1-2-3. When it goes to shift into 4th does it make the shift and neutralize, or just stays in 3rd. Are there any codes present? Have you had it scanned? Gary

It makes the shift and after several miles it looses overdrive The service engine light is not on. I will scan it and see if there are any codes for transmission

Hello, Are you able to view live data with your scanner? So as your driving it drops out of 4th, but always shifts 1-2-3 ok? Sorry for all the questions, but there are a few different ways to go on this one. One thing i also may have you do is unplug your transfercase control module and drive the car to see if your problem goes away. Gary

Im not sure of that brand, but if you can see live data, hook it up and drive the car, when it drops out see if it commanded it to do that. the dissconnect tccm see if still have problem. Gary

Tccm is Transfercase control module, it is located center of dash, but if there is a 4x4 fuse, pull the fuse out instead of tearing the center apart. I would drive the car with the scanner on it first and watch the live data, without a code present alittle hard to get direction. For instance, you could have a solenoid problem inside the trans, The manual lever position sensor(p-r-n-d-l) could be bad, even a bad engine temp sensor can knock it out of 4th, but the big question is, is the computer commanding the trans to do this.

Just drove the truck 8 miles from work to home and had no problems. Can't seem to understand this thing. I did do a live data really not sure what I was looking for. I can hear a noise from under the truck sounds like something not completely in gear. This truck has 4 wheel drive selector on the floor and looks to be in 2 high.

I found a fuse marked 4wd. It is fuse #24 on the fuse panel inside truck. I pulled it out and going to see if noise goes away

See if you have on your scanner when you view live data, look for current gear or gear commanded. See if you have that, Is engine temp normal?

Did not see that on the scanner but I did see that the temp was 196 .. After I put it on Jack stands I noticed that the rear is making a lot of noise so now I believe I have to change all bearings in the rear end before I can go any further. I also remember that the connector for the 4 wheel drive was unplugged when I got the truck. Not sure why ?? I plugged it back in about a week ago. Hope that has nothing to do with it.

Sorry it took so long to get back with you.I just got the rer end back together. I pulled the 4x4 fuse and its doing the same thing. I am looking into getting another tranmission , that is if i cant get this figured out . one question I have is , can i put a trans out off a 2wd in this truck if i pull all the 4wd tranfercases out and put a drive shaft with a carrier bearing in it.. The engine temp is normal . Thanks for any advise

you did SCAN? - always ask is scanner able to read all codes P0999 and up? low end readers do not. I have often seen confusion over gears - is it 4th gear problem OR is it a TCC issue?

I did scan and no codes present. All I have is a small store bought one . Its loosing overdrive which I am assuming is 4th gear. I dont know what the TTC is . I can try to change that . Is it in the transmission or on side of it.

need to know if you are getting ALL codes esp the p0999 and up, so called manufacturers specific... I am thinking we should first look at a TCC issue, quick and no trans work. will your cruise control work ? does it behave the same dropping out? You have any brake light issues? You do NOT drive with 2 feet - left foot braking right throttle?
