2008 Chevy Impala SS transmission problem

2008 Chevy Impala SS. 170,000 miles, 5.3 L V-8 engine. It seems like my transmission is slipping a little. When I was driving and I set my cruise at 85 and was cruising along and every once in awhile my RPM's would jump 400-500 for a few seconds and then return back to normal. When it did that, my engine would kick a little and the car would jerk forward but I didn't lose or gain any speed. Could that just be from low transmission fluid? I drove at a slower speed and my engine still kicked and my engine roared without me pushing down the pas peddle more. I haven't tried anything yet. Was looking for any help.

It may be simply downshifting to maintain momentum. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Scan for codes yes even if CEL is off... the cruise control stays engaged just the RPM flair, no mountains, rolling hills, road grades - anything that would change MAP ?

The first couple times it happened there were some hills but I didn't lose speed at all. My RPMs just kicked up briefly. Now it seems like it happened even when I'm not going up hills.
