2002 Focus Clutch or master cylinder failing Sign In

Hi I just picked up an 02 Focus with the 2.0 split port motor. The clutch is shuttering and there is a brief shrieking as I pull away and the gears have been getting harder and harder to shift. It had sat for over a year before I acquired it. I'm assuming the clutch is failing but I want to be sure before I pull the car apart.

The brief tests I've done have been revving up the engine and dumping the clutch in 5th on the freeway, the clutch does slip for a few moments but it's not crazy significant. The other test I did to test the master cylinder was pumping the clutch a few times in neutral to see if it would shift easier and there was no significant difference in ease of shifting.

Anyways I'd love some thoughts and wisdom before I get started on it!

Thanks,

Jordan

Normally the hydraulic parts of the clutch system don't cause shuddering or clutch slipping. They can cause hard to get into gear symptoms if it doesn't allow the clutch to fully disengage. Really suspect you have a clutch disc that is slipping and needs to be serviced. If you do the clutch in that, be sure to resurface or replace the flywheel. Our shop has had good luck with the LUK clutch kits.

If the clutch is chattering you at least need a complete clutch kit and a flywheel. You need to check closely when you get it apart for any oil leaks getting on the clutch.

Thanks. I wanted to be sure I could rule out something like the clutch master cylinder before committing myself to such a big task.
