I just got this van. Once the trans warms up it acts like its in neutral.
Only drove it once, I went two blocks and it quit moving. It was more like I put in it neutral. I can start the van, not put in in gear until it warms, and again it will not move. I know these have known problems, however I cannot get the fault codes.
my questions are. will a actron auto scan give transmission codes?
If no codes are showing, does this sound like a solenoid pack problem?
I hate to change transmission fluid and filter on a bad trans, but I have read this can fix issues. Especially if the prior owner used wrong type of fluid. How do I get the fluid out of the torque converter? Can I undo one of the lines and let it pump out?

start with basics- fluid and codes -
fluid level and condition - a quick easy look.
Codes - ask actron about what the capability if their tool is - often online tech support.
>>> What happens when you try to connect?
>>> Try the key trick - ign key on off on off on see if codes display in odometer... I think 98 will allow this quick ck.

Fluid and filter - always a hail mary - dropping pan for visual would make sense...
do NOT worry about draining converter and flushing purging at this time.

Hello,
Your transmission filter is clogged. drop the pan see how bad it is, if the filter is colgging, then something is coming apart. Gary

Thank you, I'm working on it this weekend so I'll try the scan tool. I will need to borrow it from brother in law. I'll go ahead and drop the pan and check the filter..... I'll also check for odometer codes, thanks I didn't know this.

I dropped the pan, there is a lot of metal in the fluid, and shavings on the magnet. I think the trans is a 41te; its a front wheel dr 3.8 liter.
I'm thinking about rebuilding it. I've always been a little scared to try a rebuild, but hey you cant brake broken right. Ha...
If I do I'll probably add an extra cooler as well.
Any pointers. I'm mechanically inclined, not super book smart tho.

OK after reading some info on this; I may tear the trans apart before I rebuild. From what I understand the larger metal shavings could be a problem. The sludge is from the clutches.

I'd say your better off getting a reman with a warranty. If it is full of metal shavings, the cost of parts and labor time involved will probably exceed another one. That is my opinion.

I took a look at the rebuild instructions, and I will agree. I'm not one to scrap anything, little on a vehicle, but after watching EricTheCarGuy's - 98 T&C trans removal video......
This is why I like pre 85 chevy trucks.

After a few new sockets, 1 broken wrench, 1 broken bolt Mad the transmission is now out. It wasn't to bad, other than the broken trans mount bolt. I'm not sure if I can ez it out. I'm going to tear into transmission tomorrow.
There is a 41TE (604) Rebuild Procedures pdf online. I'm not sure if hyperlinks are allowed but here is the address for the pdf. uscars.biz/uscars/extras documents/ATRA_Chrysler_41TE_604_Rebuild_Procedures.pdf
If you try to repair or rebuild a 41te trans read below.
The pdf helped, but I found a few youtube videos were better. Search 41te teardown inspection, and also 41te repair.

Thanks Gary, The rear planetary is shot. Two of the pins holding the gears are broken. the other two are worn. I found one for $65. I'm going to double check everything one more time and put it back together. I think the front was hit, it looks like maybe someone ran over something. Could have caused the problem, because everything else looks good.

Hello,
The rear planet meshes with the sungear, look at all those gears carefully, I dont feel this happened from a hit, i feel this happened beacuse the trans is junk(lol)at one point this was the number one selling overhaul kit. They even changed the name of this unit, started out as A604, then changed the name to 41TE(but the trans is the same) Let me know how you do, im here if you have questions during assembly. Gary
