1996 Blazer Question

I drive a 1996 Chevy Blazer 4WD 4DR. I recently had my transmission rebuilt. Keep in mind around July I also had my water pump and radiator replaced. When the transmission was rebuilt, the mechanic told me the reason for the rebuild was that whoever changed out the water pump and radiator forgot to tighten the transmission cooling line, and the trans fluid leaked out, thus destroying my third and fourth gears. I was wondering if anyone can tell me on a 96 Blazer if you wuold indeed need to touch the transmission cooling line in any way in order to replace the water pump or radiator. Because if so, I would like to someway let the shop who did my radiator and water pump work know about the situation. And they also forgot to put any antifreeze back into the cooling system. Just water. Needless to say I found another mechanic. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

yes....the transmission fluid cooler is inside the radiator tank.....to replace the radiator these lines have to be disconnected from the radiator... going to be hard to pin this on anybody at this point....its been too long since repairs....mechanic will say that you should have noticed the leak sooner and brought back ....seems like it would have ruined more than just 3rd and 4th gears tho..hmmmm... good luck...

Thanks so much for the answer. I'm not going to really pin it on anyone, since the transmission repair is under warranty from purchasing the car, but I just wanted to let the mechanic know of my concern. The most concerning to me was actually the fact that there was no coolant placed back into the radiator once replaced. Just water. That being the case, I would have no idea there was no coolant in my system until I would have to do a routine check, or notice a problem. Engine was running at exactly the temperature it should be, and everything was running smoothly until this week I noticed a problem with my heat not working, so the first thing I did was check my coolant level and was surprised to find no coolant.

just wondering where you live??..where i live if i just had water in the system i would have known it a lot sooner because the temps here (illinois ) have gone down to single digits already and have been below freezing a lot.. curious what kinda mechanic worked on this ...cuz even in july he should have known to put in a good 50/50 mix of coolant so the vehicle didn't boil over.....

Where I live, we haven't really been hit too bad weather wise until the last 2 weeks. Definetly no single digits, and only below freezing on maybe one or two nights since early november. The weather is starting to take a dive though. Snow in the forecast and 20 degree weather. Luckily I have coolant in there now. But this sounds like a major oversite that I, someone who really knows nothing about cars, wouldn't think to look for... But if it's my fault it's my fault. I'll man up and pay the repairs. lol. The mechanic was a friend of a friend, always had done good work for him, but I learned my lesson...

certainly can't be your fault...heck thats why you had a "mechanic" repair the vehicle....if you don't know about something ,you have to have someone who does...ya have to trust someone... oh well, live and learn.....

Thanks Jim for your help on the matter. I'm gonna stick with people who have done solid work in the past and not try and go to a friend who did ok work for a deal. Let's just hope I can get some heat this weekend because it's gonna be damn cold!
