hi i have a toyota camry 1991 sv21 2 litre automatic, i was wondering is there anyway of overiding the lock up torque converter, on long hyway hills it will not unlock untill speeds drop to 75kph any advice would be appreciated cheers

Why would you want it to drop earlier than that? The RPMs would be way too high at that speed. ? 75kph = 46 MPH which is about right for most. As HT asked where's the switch or do you select another range on shifter on this car to disable lock up? It that doesn't work that's it own issue. I can't speak for spec for every model of everything made but most if under ~90kmh or 55MPH will kick out with enough load like asking for lots more power. If not back to that's the problem or you aren't doing something right possibly. Yes - there are driving situations where it's annoying shifting in and out constantly but this isn't your complaint, T

You could unplug the lock up solenoid, but as HT stated you should be able to cancel overdrive with the switch and get more engine rpm going up hill at higher speeds. Disabling the TCC will also cause the transmission fluid temperature to increase and you'll have a reduction in fuel mileage. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Hello, On these on-off type solenoids that work lock-up, realeasing the gas or touching the brake pedal will take it out of lock-up, but of course when your back on the gas pedal it will bring lock-up back on. When the car does go into lock up it only drops a couple of hundred rpm, I wouldnt disable lock-up and drive long distance or on a highway, the trans fluid will get way too hot. Lock-up is when the converter locks to engine rotation, whith no slip no extra heat will be generated,heat is one of the worst things for a transmission(the other worst thing is water) Gary
