1989 Mercury Sable CV/Half Shaft/Tranny Problem Sign In

Hi! Thanks for taking the time to read this. Here is the situation first: I have a 1989 Mercury Sable 3.8L Engine in which the other day while making a somewhat sharp turn I heard a somewhat loud thump and the transmission seemed to stop transfering power to the front wheels and the car would not move when pressing the gas. Now, before this every time I would make a turn the car would make popping/clicking noises and if I were to press the gas while turning and this was going on, the car would not shift into gear until after the turn. I've had a couple of people say it might be a bad transmission, but more people have indicated that my CV Joints have went bad and the halfshaft may have broke and to look at the boots as when you put the car into drive or any other gear it sounds like it does engage and wants to move. The transmission fluid is at a good level. I looked at the CV boots and both are ripped open so they could have been damaged. My question is would CV Joints or Halfshaft damage to this extreme make it so that the car would not transfer the power or torque from the transmission to the front wheels to drive the car? What is your opinion on this and what else should I check? Thank you very much for your time in advance!

It would take a completly broken off CV joint in half shaft to stop the car from moving. It would have to be an inner one to be quiet or it would be making wild noises! You can test by jacking up front wheels one at a time then both and see what it does - both in park and in neutral. - spinning the wheels by hand - engine off !!

Thanks Tom for your timely reply to my post, it is really appreciated! When I go to jack up each of the wheels and spin them in park and neutral, what exactly am I looking for and what action would you recommend if I find something? Thank you very much for your time in advance!

You are to look for a completlely broken CV joint. The ripped boots let in all kinds of junk and they can fail. Good news is the price of rebuilt shafts are cheaper than trying to fix the boots! I think I recall them being as low as $59 wholesale! Heck - you can barely fix a regular U-Joint for that! Ok - it will get marked up but it's not the world. Just want you to be an informed mechanic or customer, and this site is good at that, good luck with the fix and ask away if things come up,
