Snapped coil spring- what happens now?
Hi everyone, I currently have a low mileage 12 reg Fiat Punto that is carefully and caringly driven by myself only. The other day, the coil spring suddenly and rather dramatically snapped (front passenger side). It snapped right down low by the 'cup' bit. Anyway my mechanic quoted 100 to replace both, with which I was fairly happy. HOWEVER, he just came and towed it away and said 'umm, just to warn you this may actually cost several hundred pounds as it seems that there may be a lot of problems with it'. Why this sudden change of tune? What could possibly be wrong with it that would cost so much extra than the original quote? Just to clarify, there is NO damage to tyres, alloys or anything else as far as two mechanics have told me so far, just suspension coil. If you could let me know what is going on here I would really appreciate it, this is my first and beloved car and I am so stressed about what might happen

How would we know why he said that? We don't know how honest he is. We don't know what he may have seen when he picked up the car. This is the reason shops generally will not quote a price over the phone before seeing the vehicle. Because it may be an entirely different story after seeing the vehicle. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Yeah that's what I'm asking about; possibilities. Not a diagnosis. Honesty is the main factor I am concerned about here.

We can't tell you what else may be wrong with your car. That's why you don't get prices over the phone, or over the Internet for that matter. After the springs are replaced the car will need a wheel alignment and that can't be done unless the rest of the front end is in good shape.

I got it face to face, actually. It was on second visit that he said it may be more
