Power Steering Fluid Leak From New Pressure Line At Pump Sign In

2010 Ford Fusion Sport 3.5 200,000 Miles

I'm hoping someone could help me out as I'm perplexed and frustrated. I installed a new high pressure line and PS pump and it steady leaks even before cranking the engine to bleed the system. So it must be a large leak. I'm 90% sure its coming from the pressure line fitting at the pump.

I have two guesses. The first one being the crush washers at the fitting. I did put one crush washer on both sides of the banjo fitting. The pressure line I bought was Sunsong Part Number: 3403953. The difference between this hose and others is that the ends have circular grooves and the others have flat fittings. I'm assuming these grooves are for the crush washers to bite into. Problem is the torque spec is about 40 lbs. That isn't much torque and when I pull it back off, the copper washers barely have an indentation. I did order some crush washers with rubber seals but those wont be in for a couple days.

My second guess is the pressure switch. I noticed a random O-ring in my driveway and I cannot remember if I replaced the O-ring on the pressure switch when I took it off the old pump and put on new pump. I would have to back the pump back off to look.

Short summary, brand new pump/hose is leaking. That is before the system is pressurized so this must be a large hole for the leak.

Why are you asking us where the leak is? We can't tell you that. You are going to have to determine that yourself by cleaning the area thoroughly and visually looking for the source of the leak. If you found an O ring with no explanation, that would be my main suspect.

Thanks for the reply. Lack of sleep and aggravation with this thing so sorry wasn't as specific. I wasn't asking for you to tell me where my leak is I was just hoping someone could tell me if I said something that sounded wrong. Also, was wondering if it was possible that the pressure switch could leak that much. Its either the switch or the HPL on the pump. That's the only two fittings on top but there is no room to see. Ill just have to go by feel or take the pump back off.

That will never work. You can remove it to make the repair but you have to know what to repair first.

Use a mirror of whatever it takes to get sight of the fittings while the car is running. That's what we do and the only way to actually know where the leak is coming from. Oil flows all over the place so you have to use some brakleen to get it clean and dry before starting the engine and then have your eyes on it while someone else starts the car. If it leaks without even starting the car, that makes it even easier to find.
The fact that you found a loose O ring is a big clue to the problem.

Duh, one of those dang extension mirrors! I decided to change the mounts as well so I had the sub frame and engine dropped. Took hours for a novice like me and was exhausted so thank you.

Your advice was definitely worth more than I paid for it.
