new radiator needed when replacing engine? Sign In

Unfortunately, I had the common problem of a timing belt that damaged my piston and decided to replace the engine because, although expensive, I couldn't afford the time and money for a car purchase. The original estimate did not say anything about radiator problems when replacing an engine, but now that it is installed I'm told that the engine is overheating and there is a problem with the radiator and THIS IS COMMON. Is this common and should I have been warned about this before the repairs began? Previous to this timing belt problem there was no issue with overheating or any other radiator problems. I'm not worried about the honesty of the garage, I've done lots of business with them and trust them, I've just never heard that this is common and wanted other opinions. Clearly someone misread this post and I want to make sure there is no misunderstanding.

I have a 2000 Honda Civic with about 120,000 miles. I don't know the engine size but it's not high performance or anything.

Thanks for any information

The engine came to them not running, so they probably didn't know of any other problems that were there before till the got the new engine running. A lot of times you don't find other problems until you get the first problem resolved. That is a fact of working on cars.

Too true, but I know that there was no previous problem with the radiator and really all I'm asking is if it is common for the radiator to have to be replaced when the engine is, not whether there is, in fact, a problem.

Thanks

I personally have never heard of that but I'm no pro. I would think if it was a common problem a new engine and radiator would go hand and hand, you know. Was your previous engine overheating before it went? If not, I would think the overheating would be caused by something to do with the engine.

Maybe try flushing the cooling system and see if that does anything. Maybe it's clogged up or something. I could see you replacing the radiator and it still be overheating.

There are some professional mechanics on this forum who will be able to give you a definite answer so be sure to check back in throughout the day.

Radiator problems are common in a lot of different cars. Does that mean we should sell you a radiator before we have any idea if your car is overheating or not? I'm sure you'd have plenty to say about that practice.

Stop trying to blame your car's failures on someone else.

If the radiator isn't leaking, damaged, clogged, and/or transferring heat properly, you don't need to replace it when installing another engine.

Thanks, I'll do that. I certainly don't think badly of the shop, I've done lots of business with them. I'm just trying to be an informed consumer and I had never heard that it was common.

If original I don't think they are trying to oversell for this job but being cautious. Rad can be tested, flushed and have a good idea that it's good or not IMO,

You are probably right and maybe I misunderstood what he was telling me, so we'll see what happens. Thank you for taking the time to write a constructive response!
