I was told my A/C condenser needs replacing Sign In

I hope to get some advice here. I have a 2004 Toyota Tacoma that had the air conditioning compressor
replaced two years ago. The original compressor lasted 15 years with no problems. Two years ago after I had the new compressor installed something happened to it while I was driving and I immediately turned the air conditioner off. Took it into a local supposedly reputable garage where I had had the compressor put in two years ago. I was told it was still under warranty. After looking at the car they called to tell me it will cost $1100 to have the condenser replaced because bits of metal had clogged the condenser and caused the compressor to fail. I was puzzled by this, but not knowing a whole lot about car air conditioners I believed him. After doing a little research and talking to some people I wondered why the compressor would still be under warranty if something other than the compressor failed, in this case the condenser as the man said. Called them up and asked him and he said “oh it’s just a courtesy to our customers“. This made me suspicious and learning about air conditioning through YouTube I figured that the only way to the condenser would fail is if metal from the compressor had clogged it up. In other words I feel that they need to replace the compressor and the condenser. Instead of me paying $1100 for the condenser and then they replace the compressor under warranty. None of this makes sense and I wanna put this out there on this forum to see what other people think. I appreciate any input.

First advice....... Change your user name ASAP before the spammers get hold of it and have a field day.

You don't mention if the condenser was replaced with the first compressor failure. If not, that would explain the early compressor failure. It is true that when the compressor fails it sends all the debris into the next component which is the condenser. If the condenser gets restricted, that causes the pressure to run too high which ruins the new compressor.
The other thing you have to confirm is that the condenser fan is working properly and pulling sufficient air through it.

Repairing AC is a lot more than just changing parts. It takes years of experience to correctly repair a system so it will last. Every shop thinks they are AC experts but the truth is, very few are.

Thanks for the advice, I changed my user id. And for your response.
The condenser was not changed when I had the new compressor installed in 2020. But that same original condenser worked fine for two years with the new compressor (refurbished) until that compressor failed. Trying to figure out how the condenser can work just fine and then fail and how it could not be the fault of the compressor they installed throwing metal chips and causing the condenser to fail. Hard to see it their way. And why would he say the compressor was under warranty if it was the condenser that caused it to fail. I feel like I’m being taken advantage of.

I just explained it all to you. The compressor likely failed because the condenser wasn't replaced the last time the compressor failed and if you are using reman compressors, it will happen even faster.

Condensers are a filter now and have been for many years. Should be tossed with a compressor failure if and when any debris is found and it was. That should have voided compressor warranty remans are bad enough for re-failures do it all over again.

No warranty on the downstream parts that I know of it costs again each time. A/C is about a trade of its own takes some real understanding, tools and equipment to do at all this repeat costly and all isn't so uncommon should have been done with a all new parts the first time. Stinks - it's not forgiving cost wise to you or the shops that take it on at all where I am it's so seasonal it's not worth it to take up space to be able to have space for this equipment it's hard to know if it works properly for months it's too cold for a several months to know performance wise.

Other failures happen need to be done off season about impossible to know if it will work later such as accidents and road debris busting condensers (weak things) are catching crap from the roads from vehicles in front of you and you don't notice. This Domino effect will happen each time - stinks,
