Help with heater/air vent issue on Chevy Venture 2004 Sign In

Hi All,

Ok, here is the car info:
2004
Chevrolet
Venture
Not sure of engine size Blush
appx 143000!!! Not 14K sorry!

Here is my problem:

We just recently had our battery changed (not sure if this would affect anything however, I wanted to include it).

I had noticed about a week ago that my vents seemed a little off. My dial (I think that you would call it, essentially the dial that goes from 1-5) was acting a little odd. I would turn it to 1, the heat/air would come on, but when I turned it to 2, it seemed as though the air stopped, then I turned it to 3 and it came out full force and so on going up.

Then as we were driving last Thursday, I had the heat on, but all of the sudden we started smelling something like burning rubber, very strong. About the same time, I tried to switch the heat from outside to inside air to see if perhaps it was just coming from the outside. However, after I tried that one time, I went to switch back to outside air intake and then decided to shut off my air altogether, but it wouldn't shut off. No matter what I turned the air to, it wouldn't shut off.

We got home, turned off the car and then when I went to turn it on later, the air had stopped constantly going however, now only the back vents work and don't seem to produce heat. Also, my dial (the 1-5 thing) doesn't register or "click" when you try and move it. I wish I could explain it better but it's almost like it's just on one setting in which the dial will turn but it doesn't have an affect on the air pressure.

I think that's everything. Help please!!!! Thank you!

I think you are having a problem with the BLOWER motor, the fan that blows your heat or ac. yes?

Often when we see dropped speeds no blowing etc it is the 'blower motor resistor' a component mounted on the blower (fan motor assy) also due to its location the blower motor is checked being sure the blower motor resistor module did not fail as a result of the blower motor being bad.

Some dash trim panels are removed to gain access @1 hour plus the cost of module.

14,300 miles on an 04? Wow... and the blower resistor is junk already?

If you are saying that you get no feedback from the dial (doesnt click into position, just turns freely) then likely the switch in the hvac control module is damaged as well. As kev2 said, need to test blower motor and resistor as well as wiring between components to make sure you fix the source of the problem, and everything that has been damaged.

Thank you! So would the blower motor going be the cause of that awful smell?

I noticed yesterday that the vents toward the back on the floor blow out hot air. Would that mean something different? Or could is still be the motor?

Thank you all for your replies!

The blower resistor sits inside the case, so air from the blower fan goes across it and out the vents. If the resistor burns up, you'll get a smell.

There are two blowers on rear ac vehicles. The rear blower will work even if the front blower doesn't.

Are you sure rodents didn't get into the blower motor and nest?
