85000 miles
While fiddling with the controls one day I immediately got very hot air even though AC was on and temp set all the way to cold. I suspect a cable from temp control came loose. I took it to the shop but they want $400 to fix it. I think if I could remove the radio up above it or possibly remove the control unit(if there is enough slack in the cables) I could fix it my self with only a fair amount of effort. If someone could help by explaining how to remove the radio and/or the AC/Heat controls I sure would appreciate it!

Don't bank on it being that simple. What if it's the other end of the cable? The bezels have to come off before the radio.

I just have a hunch, since it was this end of the cable that got pushed and pulled on. I don't know, but its worth a try. How do I get the bezels off?

There are no instructions. Most snap in. Some have hidden screws.

This is not something that comes with instructions. Every car is different. We just look at it and figure it out.
Here's an exploded view but that's about all that is supplied to us.

I was under the assumption that if I gave all the particulars of my vehicle, anyone with more knowledge about cars than me would be able to tell me exactly how to get the bezels off. The exploded diagram is a help, but not much. For one thing, the radio looks like it's on the bottom in this diagram and on my car it's on the top. I realize there are small variations and this could be one of them. The radio here looks like it's held to the dash with screws but the top unit which looks like it might be the AC/Heat unit doesn't show clips or screws. I'm not entirely ignorant of diagrams having drawn quit a few in what seems another lifetime.

And now you see why we spend a lifetime learning how to do this stuff. No, we are not walking encyclopedias for every bolt in every car but we can look at the dash and know right away what needs to be done. You're in over your head and it's time to take it to a reputable shop.

well it looks like I'll have to find a shade-tree mechanic. I'm certainly not going to pay $400 to further some mechanics education. If they learn by experience, they shoud be paying me!

If you find some shade-tree hack you're going to be spending a hell of a lot more than $400 before all is done.
If you think they should pay you for learning something new about your particular vehicle and you are furthering their education, fine. Tell you what, I'll pay you $50 for letting me learn on your car if you pay me the $15,000 for my technical education that got me started into this industry and the $60,000 plus I've spent on tools just since 2004.
Fair trade isn't it?

If calling me stupid salves your wounded pride, go for it! At least I was smart enough to pick a profession that I could spend 4 years in school an actually learn something. looks like the consensus here that automobiles are so complicated that no one knows what works, they just have to go by trial and error. Now that real smart and takes $15000 worth of education? Most mechanics do learn by trial and error. That's why it's so expensive, they just keep replacing parts until something works!
