Faulty Thermostat ???

. 2002 Honda Civic 1.7L Engine... Cruising @ Highway Speeds Heater will Blow Satisfactory Heat.. Come to a Traffic Light, after a couple minutes @ idling RPM's Heater starts Blowing Luc Warm Air ... Question , Could this be a Faulty Thermostat ?? Not necessarily the Heater Core ??

Low coolant level can cause that also. Have you checked the coolant level in the radiator? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

So it does work some at least a HWY speeds. BTT - Yes a thermostat could do that along with other suggestions. A true bad thermostat is a bit rare to me but easy enough to check. Feel from cold the housing along hose to radiator. It should be stone cold then when T-stat opens too hot to touch - careful there. Cooling system must be known properly full. If not that is the first thing to tend to. In short I do think you'll find a thermostat that doesn't shut fully by this complaint, T

If the thermostat was hanging open, you would see that the coolant temperature would probably never get above 160 degrees F. while driving. I would connect a scan tool or code reader that can see data stream info to view the coolant temperature PID rather than using the temp. gauge. Most of the time if the heater temp goes up while your driving and dies while your stopped, it has something to due with low coolant level IMO. If it is low coolant level causing that, you should pressure test the coolant system when the engine is cold to see if there are any external leaks. DS and OP it does happen that a T-Stat doesn't quite close. Rare as said. They go crocked and you may not see it with it out. With that complaint that car would show symptoms mentioned exactly - no games. The problem is if it doesn't misbehave in front of you it will be impossible to know for sure, T
