Greetings all, I am in the process of buying a 2000 Jeep Cherokee without AC. The AC went bad at some point that the belt was routed around it. Assuming that something "catastrophic" happened and debris got into the system, what would be the best/cheapest method to repair this? Can I pay someone (a local bodyshop that I am friendly with) to evacuate and "clean" the system, then change the compressor myself and refill it, or change the compressor and pay someone else to refill it? Is there a cheaper or easier way to do this with me doing "something" in order to save some money or am I looking at a 1000$ job to get the AC working? thanks

No, you can't "clean" the system. Most of that debris went into the condenser and the design of that condenser is a "bypass" type system so there is not way to flush or clean it.

The only way to reliably repair this system is to replace the compressor and clutch with a new unit of name brand, no remans. Replace the condenser, accumulator and orifice tube (which may be a whole liquid line), then flush out the remainder of the system. You also need to add the appropriate amount of oil during assembly. After all this is completed and the systyem is evacuated and recharged with the specific amount of refrigerant, the system and pressures will have to be analyzed to determine the original cause of the compressor which could be insufficient air flow across the condenser for whatever reason or a blockage in the system.

My 2 cents on this: Someone probably already was told it would be nasty expensive and involved to fix and didn't. Vehicle pricing is frequently based on it never having A/C or it would be the most costly repair known and that # deducted from it's value. A bargain for those who don't need it or care,

Maybe you should look at something else. There are plenty of vehicles out there for sale with operational ac.

Thanks for all of the replies. I can do without AC. I am buying this as a 4X4 project, there are other issues also that I can fix.
