97 grand prix 3800 v6 constant running temp at 240 degrees Sign In

I’ve been working on a friends 1997 grand prix with the 3800 v6 in it. After we have replaced the thermostat and the coolant temperature sender, while bleeding the air out of the system the temp of the car is getting up to around 240 degrees before the fans are kicking in and when they do kick in it is only dropping to around 230. To me this is definitely to hot for the motor to be running while just sitting at idle, but the fans are regularly kicking in at 240, I let them do 3 cycles and all three times they are kicking in at 240. I’m puzzled as to why they are doing this, from what I’ve been able to research they should be coming on right around 220 degrees. Do you possibly have any other ideas to throw out there that could be my problem with the car?

What are you using to monitor the engine temperature?

I think I would question the accuracy of your temp readings. 240 degrees would almost always trigger a boil and yours didn't. I would use a laser thermometer at the thermostat housing and compare that with the scan tool data for the CTS and see how they compare.

Just going off the temp gauge in the car, so I'm not sure yet if the gauge itself may be faulty. Just trying to get some other ideas of what else it could be if not the gauge

Don't trust that gauge at all. Just use a laser thermometer and a scanner.

The computer uses a different sensor.

will be trying the scan tool, and laser thermometer this afternoon, hoping for just a faulty gauge.
