I have a 96 Ford Contour. I have been getting an electrical burning smell intermittently when running the heater. My fan motor switch has also been acting up. Sometimes speeds go 1,2,3,4. Sometimes they were 1,1,3,1. In otherwords the switch has been acting up. I have it at a mechanic now but since it's intermittent it does not smell now. This has been going on for a couple of weeks the last incident shortly after the car warmed up. I shut off the heat and it stopped. I started it up 20 minutes later and it started immediatly. The mechanic can find nothing wrong. Checked the voltage and some electrical stuff but it does not smell now. Any idea where to look?? What to tell him?? Thank you in advance!! Mark Itil

I don't know the exact location but by your description I suspect the fan speed resistor. It's not the most common way for them to fail but it is primary for fan speed. Sorry I'm no expert on the Contours and if you want I'll move your post to "electical problems" where it might get more attention. - T

It’s hard to say where the smell is coming from for sure, but I’ve found that the connector at the blower motor on a few of these Contours start to burn due to the high current flow. You’ll find this connector under the dash on the passenger side right on the blower motor housing, it’ll have two wires to it. Have a look and let us know what you find. Dan. Canadian "EH"
