2008
ford
ranger
2.3L
28000mi

this is my gf's truck.
heat has always worked extremely well up till now.
first time this season heat was needed, she turns the temp switch to the red side and no heat.
my first thought was the inline control valve...connected hand held vacuum pump to actuator and applied vacuum and released to see if valve was operating properly.
actuator worked as supposed to...full open to full closed and no leak down.
connected an inline vacuum gauge to the vacuum line going to the actuator...started engine...vacuum gauge moved to 10 inches of vacuum but immediately started slowly losing vacuum till it was back on 0.
never regained vacuum no matter what position the temp switch was turned to.
coolant level is normal.
where do I need to turn my attention to now to fix this problem?
as always, any help from you all is and will be very much appreciated.

With the engine at full operating temp, locate the 2 heater hoses where they go into the firewall and feel them to see if they are both hot to the touch. If not too hot to hold, then you have to look at the actual engine temp and if that is up, if it is, then your looking at a restricted heater core.
If you find that they are both too hot to hold, then the heat in that vehicle is controlled by a blend door that regulates heated air flow. it is operated by an electric motor/actuator. The problem can be that the actuator is stripped or inoperative or the door itself could be damaged. This is what needs to be determined by examining the actuator and see if it is responding to heat change commands or not.
If they are both not too hot to hold on to, then you either have a restricted heater core or the system is not completely full and getting air pockets for some reason.

temp- normal operating
heater hoses not hot to the touch until I removed the vacuum line and valve opened...then hoses same temp as radiator hose.
the valve operates as I pull the vacuum line on and off....however, the valve/actuator does not respond to switch movement.
so, I will turn to look at the blend door possibility....ouch!....I don't have a printed view of how to proceed...is there a site that I may visit and retrieve a print-out of this?

It can be accessed through the defroster opening at the top of the dash on the passenger side after removing the louver and vent hose.
